webfact Posted January 30, 2019 Share Posted January 30, 2019 Back to school for the elderly in Hua Hin By PIYARAT NILDEE THE NATION HUNDREDS OF elderly residents in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s district of Hua Hin reported at a special college yesterday, ready for classes in school uniforms. They have enrolled in the School for the Elderly College for the Sweet Generation, and will take classes in legal knowledge, vocational training, basics about contacting government agencies, dhamma and the English language. They will also be given tips on healthcare and phone usage. “This programme has been launched to ensure that elderly people have something useful to do during their free time, and can maximise their potential,” mayor of the Hua Hin Municipality, Nopporn Wuttiku, said. The special courses will be provided every Wednesday for four months. Nopporn said the number of students has been rising since the school opened in 2016. Initially there were 200 students, but the number jumped to 230 in the second batch and the latest batch has 250. The course has been designed to help people grow old with knowledge and dignity. SteveB2 Posted January 31, 2019 Share Posted January 31, 2019 Thailand already runs a Non Formal Education NFE system across the country to help all adults attain basic school certificate from Pratum (Junior) through to Matiyom (High School). I attend the local NFE schooling at Wat Jittapawan (Banglamung, Chonburi). There's about 4,000 adults from 18-80 attending. Our classes have quite a few seniors (I'm 58) attending. 25 years ago when I first came to Thailand, it was very common to meet Thai people who only had Pratum-4 level education or even less, such as a couple of years attending a 'Wat School' being taught only Thai alphabet by a monk under a tree. My wife's mother is illiterate and cannot even sign her name. Times have moved on. Larger Thai companies will now insist on a minimum Matoyom-6(senior high school) certificate proof of education to do even the most menial of jobs. The NFE classes are great. All students and teachers dress smartly, are polite and friendly. The schooling uses training materials that are up to date and free of charge for all to attend. Best of all it allows for socialization and mental stimulus. hmm, well I hope they will use the stuff they learn for good because. some 65 years old or so lady here was given a tablet recently and now as a result she is on it like 90% of her awake time. last night I woke up thirsty, went out around 3am to get some juice at 7eleven and she was still on it.
