Trump steps up attacks on Pelosi for opposing border wall funds

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump stepped up his attacks on House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday, saying "she's very bad for our country" and "doesn't mind human trafficking" because she opposes his long-promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Republican president also said there is a "good chance" he will follow through on his previous threats to bypass the U.S. Congress and declare a national emergency to obtain funding for a wall.

Trump, known for personal attacks on critics and political adversaries, made his comments a week after agreeing to end a 35-day partial government shutdown without getting the $5.7 billion he had demanded from Congress to help build the wall. His retreat was seen as a political victory for Pelosi, who became speaker last month when Democrats took over control of the House from the Republicans.

Trump, in an interview with CBS News, called Pelosi "very rigid" and said she was trying to "win a political point" by opposing his demands to fund the wall. Trump has said the wall is needed to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Pelosi has called the wall expensive, ineffective and immoral.

Construction of a border wall was one of Trump's signature 2016 campaign promises, and he repeatedly said at the time that Mexico would pay for it.

Democratic control of the House, even as Republicans maintain a majority in the Senate, endangers Trump's legislative goals including wall funding. Democrats have proposed billions of dollars for border security, but no money for a wall.

"I think she's very bad for our country," Trump said when asked what he learned in his negotiations with Pelosi.

"Basically she wants open borders. She doesn't mind human trafficking or she wouldn't do this," Trump added.

Pelosi has previously backed legislation to fight human trafficking and called it "an abhorrent crime."

A bipartisan House-Senate committee is considering proposals for funding border security measures for the current fiscal year ahead of a deadline in two weeks when stopgap funding ends and a new partial federal shutdown could begin. Pelosi said on Thursday, "There's not going to be any wall money in the legislation" to fund border security for the rest of this year.

'WILD AND PREDICTABLE'

Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi, in a statement condemned Trump's "wild and predictable misrepresentations about Democrats' commitment to border security."

"Democrats have put forward strong, smart and effective border security solutions in the bipartisan conference committee, while the president still refuses to take a second shutdown off the table," Hammill said.

Under the U.S. Constitution, Congress holds the national purse strings and approves major expenditures of taxpayer funds.

Trump said at a White House event he might declare an emergency because it did not appear Democrats in Congress were moving toward a deal to provide wall money. Such a step likely would prompt a court challenge from Democrats.

"I think there's a good chance that we'll have to do that," Trump added, referring to the possibility of an emergency declaration.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, told Trump in a private conversation on Tuesday that declaring a national emergency could divide the Republican Party and result in Congress passing a resolution disapproving the declaration, the Washington Post reported, citing two Republicans with knowledge of the exchange.

A spokesman for McConnell declined to comment on the Post story. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Pelosi has said she was open to negotiating funding for more ports of entry or additional border security technology. She said the 17 House and Senate negotiators working on legislation to fund homeland security for the fiscal year should decide components of border security.

Democratic negotiators unveiled a detailed opening position containing no money for additional physical barriers on the border to control the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs. Previously they had supported $1.3 billion for new fencing and improvements to existing barriers.

Give it up trump, you took Pelosi on and she outmanoeuvred you.

Deal with it.

If you want a tax payer funded wall, campaign on that platform.

Cost it realistically and put your plan before the electorate and see how far it gets you.

So she fights human trafficking, but Donald wrongly accuses her about the subject, because as we all know, telling lies is just second nature to him. He has obviously worked out given the fairly blunt refusal the Mexicans gave, that hounding them for the money won't work. I wonder how long it will take him to work out that Pelosi isn't going to give it to him either.

For a supposedly astute businessman, simple things do seem to elude him for quite a while.

Can I have some of that stuff you on so I don't have to piss myself laughing when I read your posts

I knew Trump would fold, during his self created "Trump wall shutdown crisis". He could not handle the huge drop in approval numbers, and he was totally taken off guard, that most of America blamed him, and only him for the "Trump wall shutdown". It was his fault on every level. He fabricated a crisis, then got caught with his pants down, when he declared war on the new congress, and the American people. Now, he looks weak, and dumb, all accurate presumptions.

Going up against Pelosi was a real mistake. It was before, and it will be again. Some things this guy just does not learn. He always defaults to his bully tactics. Not going to work with Nancy. Pelosi made Trump look naive and stupid before. And she is about to do it again. He is a terrible negotiator. She is masterful. He is of modest intelligence. She is very sharp. Aside from insults, he doesn’t really know how to deal with assertive older women, because for his entire life they have existed outside of both his immediate view and his broader imagination. When he talks about “women”, it’s obvious that only a small subsection of them fit into his definition; some might have qualified, but by virtue of challenging him can be written off as bimbos; a few others are witch-like hags who have surrendered their claim to womanhood; and the rest are simply invisible. The women of Trumpworld have a single role, and that is to say “yes”. Trump has long bought and paid for that acquiescence. Now, Pelosi is telling him no, and she has real power and can’t be ignored, replaced or waved away. They aren’t in direct competition (as he was with Clinton and Fiorina), so he is less able to leverage more generalized public sexism to win his battle against her. He’s used to women helping him feel like a big man. Now, here’s a woman who makes him look small and impotent.

Which is why Trump will respond the only way he knows how: with feeble insults and exclamation-point-laden letters. Pelosi played it cool. She knows how the rules work and how the system operates, and she’s no stranger to condescending men who insult her before they vastly underestimate her. Trump, on the other hand, has never had to work directly with a woman like Pelosi, and seems completely perplexed by her behavior, which is so different from that of all the other women in his world. She knows what she’s up against. He can’t seem to tell what species she is. And it usually ends poorly for the man who can’t tell a kitten from a lion.

Hence, a total surrender. Nancy beat his butt. Watch her do it, over, and over, and over. Will he ever learn? He is a fairly old dog, and it is possible he just cannot learn any new tricks.

False. There is no wall around her property.

And even if it were true, which might be a first for a claim from you, it would still be irrelevant to building a wall in areas of low density habitation.

There ought to be some sort of forum rule that forbids bald-face lying, especially when you do it again and again.

Most drugs & people come through tunnels 20 metres under the surface don't they ?

No, except for moving marijuana through tunnels.

  • The majority of illegal drugs enter the United States in an assortment of vehicles, with drugs hidden in secret compartments in door panels or the roof, gas tanks, tires and even engines.
  • Cargo trains, tractor-trailers and passenger buses have been used to move illegal drugs. Trucks and trains carrying fresh produce such as watermelons, limes and other fruits and vegetables have been used to bring in narcotics.
  • Border Patrol and other law enforcement agents have encountered smugglers using ultralight aircraft to conduct drug drops.

The majority of illegal immigrants come from overstays after obtaining visas through border points of entry.

I am politically wrong too, as I have a wall around my house. Keeps dogs and stray locals out. Did any of you 'wall-saying trumpomaniacs' ever ask if certain private walls around houses may have already been erected before the owners you accuse of building them moved in ?

Trump lashing out again despite Republicans telling him it is making things worse for both himself and the party. He is a one trick pony and has been found out , the cracks are growing daily , he is finished.

Yeah, his only move now is the call the national emergency, which will be his final chapter. Another shutdown just puts him deeper in it again. The good thing about a national emergency is that he and his staff will be so busy mired in the lawsuits, (not to mention facing national outrage) and the funds he wants to appropriate to start the wall frozen pending litigation that the wall will never even get started before he finishes his one term, if that.

A Chinese New Year wish. Total blackout of Trump from the media for a month.

That would mean people would have to stop talking about him here for five seconds. That simply won't happen. Look at how many replies the stories that don't involve Trump get. Other than Brexit hardly any replies.

With the kind of attention he gets, you'd think he was POTUS.

Trump will not get the wall built since Mexico won't pay for it. He's different from other politicians in that he's an unstable semi retard who never ever tells the truth. He won't get "them" (?) done. MAWA!
