I too visited Rio de Janeiro and consequently, Copacabana beach. I was serving in the Royal Navy at the time and we, our Frigate and a sister ship, (Yes. We actually had a navy then), were escorting the RY Britannia with Queen Elisabeth on board for her South American visit.

Copacobana beach was a nightmare. You could not go in the water unless you wanted to lose everything you had. It was packed and the eye candy was fantastic - but wary of British sailors. A mate of mine had visited before. He and another matelot were in a taxi stopped at traffic lights when some jerk stuck a gun in the window and shot the other sailor, who died instantly.

Fights and aggression against Brits were rife and knives together with guns were frequently displayed at the local nightclubs and bars. It was at that stage, I decided that Rio would never be for me.

I first visited Thailand in 1964, again on a British frigate. I fell in love with Bangkok, having steamed up the Chao Phraya river overnight for a 10 day visit. Thailand was exciting for us at 20 years old - it was paradise and Bangkok then was about the same size as Chiangmai was 10 years ago.

I returned again in 1973 - again for an official visit with the RN. Fantastic! In 1994 my ex-wife gave us a three week holiday in Asia for my 50th birthday. We did Singapore, (a familiar and much loved destination for the Navy), Malaysia and Thailand. We returned many times after that for backpacking holidays and included, Burma, Cambodia and Laos in our travels. By then, we were spending up to three months in Asia, but nothing compared to Thailand, where we spent most of our time.

I've now been living here for 14 years, now in my 15th year. Yes, there have been some ups and downs, but I would not trade my current lifestyle for any other country, willingly. I will probably be here for the long haul, (but always with a plan B - just in case...….)

So?

Goodness me...

Bland, anodyne and completely irrelevant.

Remember those fat gutted mongers in the 90's?

The ones that claimed that they knew all about ThaIland?

It's about as interesting as 3 day old sticky rice.....

Interesting read as always, Mr R.

However, I think that you are asking the wrong question; it is not whether we want to stay in the Kingdom, it is whether or not the kingdom wants us to stay.

For the first time since my initial visit in the 90's, I am not sure of the answer.j..

Don't think the kingdom ever wanted us to stay. The question is whether we are able to stay.

Rooster, i really liked this one, very nice read. I'm a smoker though, but i like it to be filthy and so yesterday. I moved from BKK to the far south two years ago and let at least the filthy air behind me and i prefer the provincial life against the hustle and bustle of BKK, especially because that's sooo yesterday..

Yes-total slog.

Almost like experiencing life after death...everything they tell you in the Bible is not necessarily true...

Neverending visa nonsense is correct. Always upset, stressed and living in fear of whatever happens next with the visa. I will be giving Vietnam and Cambodia a pass and just going home. Because it is easier, I don't need a visa to be at home. Is sad, but no choice. They want us out.

At least this week we were spared Scrabble, Harrow, etc., so better not to complain...
