Want To Use 3.5 Ide Or Sata Drive With My Notebook

Featured Replies

Hi guys

My notebooks hard drive is beginning to show signs of wear and tear and to err on the side of caution I checked out the prices of a replacement and found a 2.5 120gb Western Digital 5400 rpm for 3350 bht and a 3 yr warranty which seems ok.

But then I checked out the 3.5 ide drives and for the same money I can get about 320gb 7200 rpm and a 5 yr warranty. A lot more space and lot faster too

So my question is this. If I continue to use my old 2.5 drive sparingly, is it possible that I can buy a 3.5 with an appropiate case and still use it with my laptop through USB 2 or similiar. I am checking the www.Thanni.co.th and www.jib.co.th websites but I am confused as to what I will need to buy to make this work

Thanks as always guys

If your notebook is old it will probably only accept an IDE drive.

Only the very latest notebooks will support SATA.

Depending on what you mean by wear and tear, you will probably be better off buying a new 2.5" drive

and installing that.

Using an external 3.5" drive is an option, but you have to consider some matters.

1. You need USB 2 to support an external drive at a decent speed.

2. The internal drive will still run the OS and can crash at an time.

3. You need external power for the 3.5" drive and it destroys the portability of the notebook.

4. External 3.5" drives need careful cooling.

Up grade the notebook to the new bigger disk.

5400rpm is a stable config for a 2.5" drive.

The laptops nearly 3 years old but it was a premier machine in its time. It reports I have the following 3 usb ports

Intel 8280 1db/dbm USB host controller - 24c2

Intel 8280 1db/dbm USB host controller - 24c4

Intel 8280 1db/dbm USB2 Enhanced host controller -24cd

I do a lot of downloading and quickly fill space. When running Belarc it reports my 2.5 drive as healthy so its more of a precaution to buy another drive and back up any important data and it seems you get a lot more GB for your baht with 3.5 drives. I dont mind investing in a suitable case and fan as I can use this drive with my other desktop machine as well

So what do I need to buy and moreso, seeing as I dont live anyhere near BKK, where can I order it online

Thanks

I have a SATA 320Gb (300GB in reality) in an external case, connected via USB2.

It works well.

I back up all my files there and use it as a store for music and films downloaded from the net.

The only problem is heat dissipation. It gets very hot and I really need a fan blowing on it all the time.

A case with its own fan, and more ventilation holes would be better.

The setup you have is what I was considering but I had heard that heat dissapation might be a problem so I am looking for a box with its own psu and fan..........just not sure where I can see and then order one online, hence I was asking for opinions as to what would be best to order.

I also have to admit that I dont really know the difference between ide and Sata 11. The prices for 320gb is identical and I assume it will work on my laptop but not so sure will it work on my old desktop PC through usb 1. So should I buy Sata or 3.5 IDE
