Pressure rises on Gen Prayut to debate other PM candidates

Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is coming under increasing pressure to take part in political debates with other prime ministerial candidates.

The People’s Network for Elections in Thailand (PNET), a non-governmental organization monitoring elections in Thailand, today posted a poem on its Facebook page calling for individuals, who aspire to become future leaders of Thailand, to have the courage to participate in political debates.

PNET did not mention the current Prime Minister and candidate for the pro-junta Palang Pracharat party by name, though his party has yet to respond to invitations to join live, nationally televised debates with the other candidates. Last week, Democrat party leader, former prime minister and candidate for the next premiership Abhisit Vejajiva challenged Prime Minister Prayut to join a debate.

From what I have read the PM has little debating skills. He has controlling discussion skills and bullying skills, talking about himself skills a limited vocabulary and is inclined toward crabbiness.

His minders would do well to keep him away from intelligent dialogue.

Well they have done a great job of that,  Oh, so you meant the intelegent dialogue of others. Yep, got it.

Hence Prayut - via his lackeys - trying to remove Thanathorn from the election.

Yes of course - that is the only way Prayuth and his cronies could “win” an election - by dissolving all other parties!

And knowing Prayut's short fuse, he'd probably want to use a vat of sulphuric acid too.

Even in the unlikely event of Prayuth participating in a debate on equal terms with other politicians, I suspect the other participants would conform to what are sometimes seen as Thai cultural values and be at pains to avoid confrontation and even difficult questions. In other words, Prayuth would be accepted as a "normal" candidate for the position of PM and would not be challenged at all on past actions which in other countries would be regarded as crimes.

Not in this lifetime... a live debate nah !!!

Only if he was given the questions ahead of time, was allowed to give his practiced answers, and was guaranteed that no-one would question his answer or ask for an out-of-turn response.

Could you imagine him in an American style candidate live debate... he'd get slaughtered!
