A 31-year-old air hostess was found dead on Thursday in her apartment in Bangkok's Ratchathewee district in an apparent charcoal-burning suicide, Din Daeng police inspector Lt Colonel Thewa Boonchawiang said.

The woman's body was found in her room on the 11th floor of a 26-storey condominium in Makaksan. She left a suicide note complaining about a relationship issue. There was no sign of struggle and police found the room's smoke sensors were tightly sealed with tape.

The apparent suicide was discovered at around 9am because the deceased woman's friend phoned her sister, who was working on a hospital night shift, to ask where she was as she failed to show up for work. The sister – along with the woman's doctor boyfriend who got a message about her reported desire to inflict pain on herself – found the body and unsuccessfully tried to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Whats so difficult about charcoal suicides? You burn a pot full of charcoal in closed quarters & seal off any vents. Any fool can figure that out. I just did.

I am happy you were not successful.

Didn't all media outlets recently get told not to report details of charcoal suicides yet you go and show a picture of it?

Why on earth would they be told not to report on them?

An open fire like that shows complete disregard for the other people living in the high rise. If you want to top yourself go ahead....but don't take other innocent people with you hostie. Skyhags where I come from.

Who did she take with her?

Those pots are used for cooking, what's so dangerous about them and what's the difference between that and cooking on a gas flame in a condo?

Very sad to hear that an educated person with a reliable position would get so emotional

over a guy. It beggars belief to me

The fact that "it beggars belief to you," suggests that you don't understand the mechanisms that lead to suicide. And that you fortunately haven't experienced the criteria listed two paragraphs below.

The subject is very complex but it is wrong to take at face value the causative relationship between her boyfriend issues and her suicide. It was far more likely to be a trigger than a cause. In addition, you have highlighted her education as a surprising factor. In fact, non-elderly suicides have a correlation with high levels of educational attainment not the opposite as you suggest.

Suicide is often associated with depression, feelings of no self-worth, no optimism about the future and a lack of a support network of friends and family leading to emotional isolation as well as more tangible indicators such as being a victim of sexual, physical or psychological abuse and substance use.

In many countries it is the leading cause of death in the 25 - 45 age range, particularly for men.
