JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A Palestinian stabbed an Israeli soldier to death in the occupied West Bank on Sunday and used his rifle to wound another soldier and a Jewish settler before escaping, Israeli officials said.

 

The incident began at an intersection near Ariel, a large settlement, where the Palestinian, having carried out the stabbing and grabbed the slain soldier's gun, fired at three vehicles, hitting a civilian, the Israeli military said.

 

He then hijacked a car, driving it to another nearby junction where he shot a second soldier before continuing on to a nearby Palestinian village.

 

It was not immediately clear if more than one assailant was involved. Settler officials identified the wounded civilian as a local rabbi. Hospital officials said he was in critical condition.

 

In public remarks at the weekly cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke of several assailants, saying: "Security forces are pursuing the attackers. I am certain they will be apprehended."

 

Jason Greenblatt, the White House's Middle East envoy, said on Twitter: "We condemn today's brutal attack by a Palestinian terrorist."

 

The Islamist group Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, praised the West Bank attack as a "natural response to crimes committed by the Israeli occupation". The statement stopped short of a claim of responsibility.

 

In southern Gaza, the attack was announced over mosque loudspeakers and Hamas activists handed out sweets to passersby in celebration.

 

The Israeli military said it did not yet know if the attacker was affiliated with any organisation.

 

Palestinians, many of them individuals without known associations with militant groups, carried out a wave of attacks in the West Bank in late 2015 and 2016, but the frequency of such incidents has since decreased.

 

Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war. Palestinians seek to establish a state there and in the Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Israeli-Palestinian peace talks collapsed in 2014.

Note where the attack took place..the West Bank illegally occupied by a fully armed IDF soldier in uniform.

 

Stupidity is the IDF's continued illegal occupation in a futile attempt to subjugate the majority indigenous Palestinian population. The Palestinians ain't going away and will continue resistance. Israel will have to face reality one day.

 

As the Palestinian population increases Israel is just kicking the can down the road...the illegal occupation and peace initiatives don't even score a mention in the current Israeli election campaign.

The same kind of violence occurs over and over again in colonial situations where the locals are massively outgunned. Nothing unique about what's happening in the occupied territories.

The point seems pretty obvious but as usual it seems to be beyond your grasp. So I'll spell it out for you:  If you dispossess people of their land, and subject them to unequal treatment under the law, they will do whatever is in their means to fight back.

If Israel wanted peace, they were not building illegal settlements on lands belong to Palestinians. and they are building them while we are speaking here.

Hamas is the root cause of Palestinian suffering. It is they who fire rockets from schools, hospitals etc in the hope of attracting retaliation

The civilians you refer to are not innocent civilians; they are illegally occupying fanatical settlers/squatters (often armed themselves) who know exactly what they are doing protected by the IDF...living on stolen Palestinian land.

Not every country recognizes the Palestinians as having a country; nor Israels as an occupying foreign power; nor even any international court.

Name a single country other than Israel itself that recognises Israel's occupation of the West Bank as legal... where the OP happened. Even the USA has not done that.

 

The Geneva Convention (read the link above) allows for violent resistance to an occupying army. Israel is a signatory to the Geneva Convention.

 

International Law does exist despite the inconvenience to Israel and your wishful thinking.

What were the politics of the IDF soldier who willingly took part in an army of illegal occupation? He could have refused service in the West Bank and been a conscientious objector as many have done.

Well they could always recognise state of Israel , denounce terrorism and sign a peace treaty offered instead of making demands which would never be met and have not been met for 100 years. 

 

Thet wanted gaza back , they got it back only to continue with attacks , how is west bank going to be any different if Israel withdrew
