JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A Palestinian stabbed an Israeli soldier to death in the occupied West Bank on Sunday and used his rifle to wound another soldier and a Jewish settler before escaping, Israeli officials said.

The incident began at an intersection near Ariel, a large settlement, where the Palestinian, having carried out the stabbing and grabbed the slain soldier's gun, fired at three vehicles, hitting a civilian, the Israeli military said.

He then hijacked a car, driving it to another nearby junction where he shot a second soldier before continuing on to a nearby Palestinian village.

It was not immediately clear if more than one assailant was involved. Settler officials identified the wounded civilian as a local rabbi. Hospital officials said he was in critical condition.

In public remarks at the weekly cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke of several assailants, saying: "Security forces are pursuing the attackers. I am certain they will be apprehended."

Jason Greenblatt, the White House's Middle East envoy, said on Twitter: "We condemn today's brutal attack by a Palestinian terrorist."

The Islamist group Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, praised the West Bank attack as a "natural response to crimes committed by the Israeli occupation". The statement stopped short of a claim of responsibility.

In southern Gaza, the attack was announced over mosque loudspeakers and Hamas activists handed out sweets to passersby in celebration.

The Israeli military said it did not yet know if the attacker was affiliated with any organisation.

Palestinians, many of them individuals without known associations with militant groups, carried out a wave of attacks in the West Bank in late 2015 and 2016, but the frequency of such incidents has since decreased.

Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war. Palestinians seek to establish a state there and in the Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Israeli-Palestinian peace talks collapsed in 2014.

Care to quote the specific law? While at it quite for me how international law considers attempted murder of random civilians?

The same kind of violence occurs over and over again in colonial situations where the locals are massively outgunned. Nothing unique about what's happening in the occupied territories.

So what point are you trying to make? Or you do not have one as usual?

The point seems pretty obvious but as usual it seems to be beyond your grasp. So I'll spell it out for you:  If you dispossess people of their land, and subject them to unequal treatment under the law, they will do whatever is in their means to fight back.

So once again yet another pointless ramblings

RIP.

But but, if someone or a group comes to my house or land, trying to steal it by force and tying to push me into poverty with no future, i might shoot the intruders too.

all of us do the same. Jew or muslim.

I am against any loss of life.

still, if you serve an army stealing and occupying lands, working against all international laws and rules illegally and oppressing people in an open zoo kind of environment and even go destroy their makeshift houses, this is what you get.

check this recent video below, Israeli soldiers harassing and beating a Palestinian under detention in their vehicle.

what you expect if you oppress Palestinians this way?? just let them turn you their other cheek?

you reap what you sow.

Very valid point , so what if Palestinians do not want peace , so what if Palestinians killing civilians , so what?

no problem , Israel will continue to hunt down killers, demolish their homes and move them further away, no need to cry when few dozen soldiers show up in his village and turn it up side down ????

it is israel that does not want peace until they steal and occupy whole palestine.

If Israel wanted peace, they were not building illegal settlements on lands belong to Palestinians. and they are building them while we are speaking here.

nor they oppress palestinians and sanction them to let them live in bad conditions.

There are lots of clever people in Israel. If they really wanted peace, sure they got it already by now.

Of course you right once again, as I said do not cry when his village is gone

Hamas is the root cause of Palestinian suffering. It is they who fire rockets from schools, hospitals etc in the hope of attracting retaliation

Off topic deflection. The OP took place in the West Bank.

So you believe, and can show, that the murderer has no links to Hamas whatsoever?

Red herring. His political associations are irrelevant. He was quite rightly resisting illegal occupation.

What were the politics of the IDF soldier who willingly took part in an army of illegal occupation? He could have refused service in the West Bank and been a conscientious objector as many have done.

Palestinians have a legal right to resist occupation including violently according to the  Geneva Convention for starters..

"In accordance with international humanitarian law, wars of national liberation have been expressly embraced, through the adoption of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions of 1949 (pdf), as a protected and essential right of occupied people everywhere.

Finding evolving vitality in humanitarian law, for decades the General Assembly of the United Nations (UNGA) - once described as the collective conscience of the world - has noted the right of peoples to self-determination, independence and human rights."

https://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2017/07/palestinians-legal-armed-struggle-170719114812058.html

"The Palestinian’s legal right to resist occupation—to fight for their ability to promote, sustain, and nurture human life, to fight for their right to grow, to flourish—comes from two documents: the 1960 Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples and the Fourth Geneva Convention and its subsequent protocols.

Taken together, people have the right to “fight against colonial domination and alien occupation in the exercise of their right to self-determination,” Brayer explained."

The civilians you refer to are not innocent civilians; they are illegally occupying fanatical settlers/squatters (often armed themselves) who know exactly what they are doing protected by the IDF...living on stolen Palestinian land.

Oh I see, so they not civilians now? Love your logic, never fails ????

So you're saying that  Palestinians should continue to suffer the occupation of their country and not do anything about it.

Well they could always recognise state of Israel , denounce terrorism and sign a peace treaty offered instead of making demands which would never be met and have not been met for 100 years.

Thet wanted gaza back , they got it back only to continue with attacks , how is west bank going to be any different if Israel withdrew
