The long-delayed sand-refilling project at Songkhla’s popular Samila beach will resume early next month, an official said on Wednesday.

Sitthichai Punthong, an engineer with the Harbour Department who is in charge of the project, said it had been delayed due to storms and big waves. The contract, awarded to KPC enterprise, also expired a few months ago due to the delay.

The engineer said the project of refilling 3.6 kilometres of the beach will resume in early April and should be completed within two months before the next monsoon begins.

The contractor has laid a 5km-long pipe from Laem Son On cape to the beach and it needs to lay another 1km-long pipe before work can begin. The company will then use a large sand-dredging boat to push the sand through the pipe on to the beach, Sitthichai added.

Say what you want about the South of Thailand...

The folks in Songkhla know how to keep a tourist beach, keep it clean, and enjoy the heck out of it!

Some of the better known Thai beach towns could take a lesson from them.

This seems to be a great business to have.

Replace the sand each time a storm erodes the beach

Not much different than a contract to clean the beach each time a storm blows in tons of trash.

Or, for that matter, to make up a hotel bed each time a guest sleeps in it.

It's a lot of redundant work, and not cheap.  But that's what it takes to maintain the resource that lays the golden eggs.

Unfortunately longshore drift and coastal erosion is an unavoidable and a quite natural process....

Unless mitigation measures are put in place (such as Sea breakers / Groynes or artificial reefs) are installed then this 'sand replacement' is a necessary process.

Well, at least they are admitting that those huge sand bags didn't make a difference...all gone! (pic from 2015)OiYek1zPjm5IpNaYmFwTOEwZQOUJHdNTc4oqbtIU

As for Songkhla keeping it prize beach clean, they will never be able to keep up with sources both from the sea and on land in the form of piggish, litter-bugging visitors. Even though the whole strand is lined with trash cans, people still turn up with enough crap to have a huge picnic, then just leave the whole mess on the beach when they leave.

They even leave little kids pampers full of feces just lying there. Disgusting.

They have a regular army of cleaners out there each morning, sweeping and cleaning, it's a crying shame they seem unable to get Thais to care about keeping their country tidy. They might love their King, but the average Thai certainly doesn't love his country.
