Thaksin removed from list of outstanding alumni

 

 

Thailand’s fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been removed from a list of outstanding alumni of the Armed Forces Preparatory School, due to his sentencing to a term of imprisonment, his escape from punishment and the stripping of his police rank.

 

The decision to delete Thaksin’s name was adopted at a meeting of the school’s alumni board chaired by Supreme Commander General Pornpipat Benyasri on Tuesday. The board also decided to recall from the ex-prime minister the Chakdao awards given to him in 1991 in the field of economic development and in 2011 in the field of management.

 

According to the criteria to qualify as an outstanding alumnae, one must have good conduct, personally and professionally and must have an untarnished record, with honesty and dedication to one’s duties and social work that is widely recognized.

"According to the criteria to qualify as an outstanding alumnae, one must have good conduct, personally and professionally and must have an untarnished record, with honesty and dedication to one’s duties and social work that is widely recognized," I guess there is, and never will be, anyone receiving this "honor."

Yes. He will send them a thank you note.

Amazing, he was awarded a reward in 2011 three years after his conviction. Seems the same criteria do not apply to those rewards. It took them a 11 years to figure all of this out. Hopefully this time frame isn't being applied to the EC in announcing election results !

"Good conduct" is a subjective quality...subject to change with each new government..????

Of course he was. Outside Thailand there's significant acknowledgement that the conviction was entirely motivated for political reasons. That's why so many countries are prepared to allow the Shinawatras residence and free movement

My remark was more geared toward the fact that the same (Thai) school awarded him an award AFTER he was already convicted. My remark had nothing to do with the validity of the conviction itself. Just pointing out that this school isn't applying it's own guidelines correctly, and that it took them a whopping 11 years to figure this out.

Silly buggers, they nothing better to spend their time on?

Thaksin has been gone over 10 years, he dont give a rats a++e about it.

I think that this is an excellent, insightful comment. And, that leads to the question; why is this in the news?

 

Seriously, why is this in the news? The idea that it is a random regurgitation doesn't add up; someone made a conscious decision to publish this. Why?

 

Is it a reminder to other 'Hi-Sos' that their precious little certificates, honours and the like are all contingent on good behaviour?

 

Is it to remind others that the proverbial 'Bogeyman' is still out there?

 

Is it thought to discourage some from 'rebelling' against the old order?

 

Is it thought to be some sort of punishment for Thaksin? I tend to agree that he likely does not give a rat's ass.

 

It is a public signal to all others who attended these schools? A reminder to behave?

 

Seriously; does anyone have a reasonable explanation for this kind of story? It didn't get published by accident, but I can't think of a good reason for it. Any old-timers with a thought or two?

Will the pettiness never end?  Obviously he still considered a force to be reckoned with. 

He is out.... standing in another country. And a farmer is a man outstanding in his field.

Incase you have missed the last few elections, Thaksin is represented by at least 2 proxy/nomini parties which always wins the most votes,

Thaksin is an economic hero and a saviour of the Thai grassroots majority of country people and farmers that maintains that in his times as a PM life were good and plenty and money was to be made, which is true as he showers gifts and freebies on everyone to win people's heart through their pockets, and this is news because now, he has be dealt a humiliation to be stripped of rank and honors that are very important to Thai hi-so...

Don't forget a very prominent lady went to Thaksin's daughter's wedding  last week where she was very warmly received and publicly embraced by Thaksin himself. I should think those pictures went down very badly in certain circles.

Wow! I have never heard you say anything nice about Thaksin! Ever! "Hero and Saviour"? Double wow! Triple WOW!!! Quadruple WOW!!! (????Sorry, couldn't resist!????)

 

However, I don't see this as 'humiliating' Thaksin at all; being stripped of 'Honours" like this merely looks petty. Further, I would imagine the effects of this action are seen 180 degrees in the opposite by the general public. I think that, to the proverbial "Somchai on the street", this is a badge of honour for Thaksin, and is evidence that he cares for the proverbial "little guy" against the Evil PTB. In fact, this looks like something that would both enhance his (and his party's) popularity and standing with the voters.

 

Am I missing something here? Is there an element to Thai culture that I am not getting?

 

This story, and this kind of story, only seems to benefit Thaksin and his political side.

 

Again, am I missing something? This seems like a political 'own goal' by the PTB.

 

Anyone able to explain this to me?

He's the leader of the Laos ethnic Thai majority, he doesn't need to be anything else to get every one of their votes in every election.

In other news , the junta have set aside 2 million baht to make a life sized wax doll of Mr Thaksin.

 

Experts are being flown in from Haiti for consultations on how best to proceed and used sanitary pads are being stockpiled.

Never heard of that award until now. Is that a prestigious award? The academy is equivalent to the last 3 years of senior high school. Don't think Thaksin even remember that insignificant award. The timing of the removal does make the academy looks silly and petty. 

His criticism of the election commission and accusation of ballot manipulation won't help his cause.

He is history now, morally corrupt as many others.

Maybe it’s in the news simply because it happened? Why does it need to be more complicated than that?

This story shows how hopeless and short of arguments they are. Pathetic!

To be honest, Thaksin has more than 2 diplomatic passports from other countries. That is the passports he travels with and which is why he can move freely everywhere. He does not travel with his Thai passport even though it has been reinstated.

political - from memory,  it was his government judges that ruled on the case ...

Hmm, does this mean we will have another election soon. Or is the press release just a tad too late, just like the stripping.
