PHUKET:-- Airports of Thailand (AoT) have released forecasts for Phuket tourist arrivals over the Songkran period – from April 11 to 17, 2019, highlighting a significant year-on-year increase from 2018.

AoT President, Nitinai Siriratikarn, said on Wednesday (Apr 3) that Phuket International Airport is expecting 458,000 arrivals over the festive period, or an average of 65,400 people per day. This represents an increase of 16.2% on the same period in 2018.

Mr Nitinai also said that the airport expects to handle 2,300 flights over the seven-day period – an average of 330 flights per day which represents a decrease of 5.8% compared with the same period in 2018.

All lies.  EXPECTING is the key word in this article.  Oh and that archive photo is from when they had teething problems with the new check in system so the punters were lined up out into the street.

Handling 330 flights a day is 165 in and 165 out. That figure would seem about right looking at a typical day's arrivals and departures.

65,400 daily arrivals would equate to just under 400 people on each plane!

I'd guess the average capacity of a plane into Phuket would be around half that so my guess is that the person making these calculations believes that the 330 flights refers to arrivals only. An easy mistake to make!

Am I going mad or have the AOT really come up with twice the figure they should have?

Did they warn all these tourists that bathing has to be in the sea, no shower water available.

Something smells bad here.

With the rains expected to arrive 4-6 weeks late and the reservoirs looking critically low it may make for a dry Songkran. Tourists are not that interested in conserving water during their vacations. Not sure how much farming goes on in Phuket but I think they are the only group the government can negotiate with that can make a meaningful impact on consumption. Not the easiest group to negotiate with either. That said if there is no water they can't plant, but if there is some water left they will use it all and plant. Then hope for rain in the next few weeks. We will see what comes to pass. The rains will return, the question is when, and how much will fall.

The 4-6 weeks late announcement has come from the Thai Met Office, an organisation whose only accurate predictions usually occur after an event has happened!
