The transfer of Mr Big Joke will make sense if :

- the ridiculous 90 day reporting in banned by a decree

- the requirement of always providing a certificate of residence is also banned

- to get a retirement visa (or extension), they want to see funds, fine, but that should be the only criteria. just show your bank book, 800k and that's it

- ban the re-entry permit which is just a plain harassment when an expat goes abroad

if not, transfer the man or not, retirees will leave and are leaving with their money.

Ok, ridiculous, but just 2 minutes on your computer a few times a year

Always?? What for? I can't remember how many years since my last one :ermm:

Several options; not all require to show funds.

Agree they could stop that, but again, just a few minutes to get a Multiple ReEntry Permit  when you are at the Immigration to get your Retirement Extension stamp, and your are good for 1 year. Not what I call a plain harassment.

Just rumours on ThaiVisa. In real life I don't see less farang retirees today than 1 year ago.

So sure rules could be better and easier for us, but it's not that bad.

In fact, it could be worse

No such requirement.

Fixed Deposit Accounts - by example - are accepted in many places and give interests.

That is even worse. Leaving 800000 in the bank all year. The interest on a immediate acces accoun ( which is compusory) is pityful.

The arguement is, why? Why do they require these extreme measures? It was bad enough as was. Now I have to take a 600B taxi over to Changwattana over and back once more in the year. Already the taxi bill is 6000 a year. Not necessary. Overreaching powers.

Some guys posting can't seem to understand why someone would care about someone who doesn't have funds if they themselves have enough.  That says all that is needed to know about these people.  Some people are simply tired of the bs and won't be pushed around.   It's not all about you and your 800k.

It is hard for me to imagine you would know the real story being a foreigner and not rubbing elbows with Thailands elite.  This is a closed society that doesn't like foreigners getting involved in their business.

Sister in law is in the government.  I listen when they talk on the phone.  My Thai is better listened to than spoken hence they talk like I'm not there.  Although all my wives did pretty much the same thing, not thinking I understood French or Spanish either.  Knowing your posting proclivities I can understand how it would be difficult for you to imagine any Farang knows anything positive about Thailand, I can see that.

I can see that.  Another negative post about being sold a bill of goods that Thailand was a cheap retirement place when it was not.  So who told you it was cheap?  BJ?

That’s the main immigration website, it was the Bangkok Immigration site http://bangkok.immigration.go.th/intro1.html

They seem to be cleaning it up right now, only a couple of the links at the bottom of the sidebar menu go to a porno site at the moment.

I see that they still offer the combo method.  I wonder if anyone will tell Jomtein?

No matter how many times you repeat that some on here "some" will refuse to believe it, I agree with you, no way did he come up with what he was made responsible for on his own.

Does anyone truly believe that changes to Immigration rules has anything to do with this situation, This is Thailand and we should all be aware of the manner in which patronage is bestowed and also how quickly it can be revoked.

i think the option to purchase a one year elite visa should be available.  not 5. could be dead in a year from the pollution.  no red tape.  no deposit and multi entry,  just cash up front.  done.

Even Airbnb admit to bookings for April are down by 34% in Phuket

Have a link to that?  Where is this official Airbnb statement?

Airbnb being decreed illegal in Thailand can't have helped their cause, but you know of a different reason.  Link please.

maybe they had to retire him before he could be nominated for PM.

Don't laugh, he may have been getting too much influence and the seniors felt he was gaining too much popularity. Especially if any of the anti corruption and law enforcement stories were accurate. That is an absolute no-go in the RTP!

Why on earth should someone pay money and come to such a polluted place to die?

A suicide mission?

Thailand's Tourism Reputation is at stake and is just as relevant as overstayers and illegals....

Maybe someone just wants to reign him in as Thailand starts some major changes in immigration?

With so many Thais living in other countries with full citizenship, it would be great if those other countries are demanding the same in return for their citizens in Thailand

I don't think it would. We have fairer Immigration systems and I believe they should stay this way, as an example of "what's good".

That would just result in things getting even more difficult here. A major escalation in immigration's tightening up occurred in 2014 when the bureau chief announced that 8000 Thais were being kicked out of South Korea every year, whereas in the opposite direction the number was only 20. His quote at the time:

"They can deport us, we can do the same to them.”

Nobody has speculated as such, but I wonder if the transfer is simply a Thai way of dealing with massive changes at immigration that affect the Thai immigration people. Perhaps, an enemy / change agent had to be made, and, knowing Thais, once someone has instigated decisions that make it more difficult for Thais, you then cannot be left to be around them as the FACE loss issue because too much for Thais to bear.

In other words, perhaps this is simply a planned stunt to make him the bad guy who changed all the rules. The new guy will show up and say "we must continue with the new rules/plans because the bad guy started them". Thai way to avoid conflict.

I disagree with some of my good posters that it likely has anything to do with hurting western tourism or expats. Thais UNIFORMLY dislike westerners and nobody really cares about western expats in Thailand.

WRT Residence certificates I too went so many years without ever needing another one, probably about 7 or more. Then I needed to renew driving licences, previously proof of address was sufficient, now only a letter from immigration will suffice. Another reason cropped up and I was told I needed a letter off the people saying I needed a residence certificate, saying I needed a residence certificate, to get a residence certificate, sublimely asinine. Surely my Extension stamp in my passport should suffice.
