CCTV from the Thepparak area south of Bangkok showed a man who was lucky to escape serious injury after a pick-up carrying a motorbike reversed over him.

Netizens were aghast that the driver of the pick-up didn't even get out to apologize, he just drove off from the incident that happened on Sunday afternoon.

Reporters from Sanook caught up with Wanchai, 45, who was still smiling yesterday.

He said he was having a cigarette in the road as there were a lot of people in the restaurant. He was hit while he was having a coffee and distracted by looking at some water overflowing overhead.

He couldn't hear the pick-up coming because of noise from the road.

He said on a video that he wasn't hurt and the person who ran over him had said sorry.

Sanook reported that his employers said he was a great, easy going guy who would never have pressed charges. But after seeing the video they went to see driver responsible to make sure that they talked to Wanchai to say sorry.

The driver said he couldn't see him because of an adapted tailgate.

An adapted tail gate that blocks rear view would be illegal in most countries unless suitable measures were taken, mirrors, cameras, sensors etc.

But here, no one gives a flying ****!

The pickup involved did have mirrors!

In which countries are vehicles, such as a huge proportion of commercial vehicles, that have to rely on mirrors because they have no direct rear vision, illegal?

Many Thais live in a bubble. Their lack of awareness of their surroundings never ceases to astound me.

In this case, both the driver AND the pedestrian were in their individual bubbles. Standing in the middle of a car park, and expecting not to be run over? How daft is that?

How many times have we been in a supermarket aisle which is blocked by a couple of Thais and a shopping trolley, blissfully unaware of our existence? How many times have we seen scooters and cars pull out into traffic without a single glance sideways?

I rest my case.

Absolutely.

I think the in-phrase is now known as 'a lack of spatial awareness'

I was at the 711 today and there was truck parked parallel in front (no regard to bikes parked etc.) and they were checking something under the hood (couldn't do elsewhere).  I had to back my bike out behind the truck and as I heard the hood close I was fully prepared for the truck to back up with no regard.  Luckily I was out in time but one becomes increasingly defensive here.

Roads are for vehicles, sidewalks for pedestrians. I would suggest that he smokes on the sidewalk or better yet give up smoking. :coffee1:

You are asking for multitasking.

Why would anyone stand in the middle of the road for a smoke

He was cannon fodder from the start

because the new regs say you have to be a distance from any public entrance or space that makes it impossible to stand on the sidewalk.

I have to agree with your above noted observations but they are far from exclusive to Thais. I come from a fully developed country and recall encountering all these traits on a daily basis. To be "unaware" seems to be human nature (with some).

Look again, he's not on the road. Just as well you are not driving, how many pedestrians would you knock over.
