webfact
Article 270 cannot help with government’s meager majority: DPM Wissanu BANGKOK, 18 April 2019 (NNT) - Deputy Premier Wissanu Krea-ngam has dismissed calls for the use of Article 270 to have senators cast votes on legislations in joint parliamentary sessions with MPs, and commented that it is only for reform-related legislations. The deputy premier dismissed the proposal raised by Prachachon Patiroop or the People Reform Party leader Phaibul Nititawan for parliament to enforce Article 270 so that senators could join MPs in the voting on various legislations if the post-election government turned out to have a meager majority of MPs on its side in the House of Representatives. He said no other articles of the constitution could do anything about the meager majority of the government and suggested a large enough majority of government MPs be arranged. Besides, the deputy premier said he believed the Election Commission will manage to announce official results of last month’s election of MPs by May 9 as required by law, though the polling agency is apparently waiting for the Constitutional Court to pass judgment on its counting formula for party-list MP seats. If the Constitutional Court declined to judge, he said, the EC could eventually decide to choose the counting formula in accordance with the laws. He also advised the EC to consult with the Constitutional Court about the timeline for the announcement of the election results, within 60 days of the date on which the election was held, as it will fall on May 23. That would give the EC more time to work on the controversial counting of the party-list MP seats. -- © Copyright nnt 2019-04-

davehowden
"If the Constitutional Court declined to judge, he said, the EC could eventually decide to choose the counting formula in accordance with the laws." That's a novel concept for Thailand!!

You don't organise a cast iron majority of senators in an appointed senate, and then not use them, now do you? Just about every proposal can be justified as a reform! nong38
If military or former military officers were not allowed to stand or be involved in the Government it might go a long way to promoting democracy in this country. I know many will not like that and the constitution would need to be changed but I think it would be a step in the right direction. 12 coups since democracy came to this country should tell you that something is not or does not work. I will not be easy to change though it seems to be part of the Thai custom now. The normal political parties must feel disillusioned with the current situation. A month ago al election and does anyone know what is going on, who is forming a government how many seats does each party have? How did they arrive at that figure? No wonder people what is going on. Eligius
Don't worry: a way will be found. Where there is the will, there is always a way (not the will or way of the Thai people, of course - they don't count).

Especially considering that Prawit is part of the NCPO. Prayut as Chief of NCPO can issue a legal, constitutional order to allow the Senate to vote with House MPs on various legislations .... for the sake of national unity. Conflict resolved. Democracy trampled.
Guest
How can the Senate vote on legislation? They haven't elected a Senate. Is there another election scheduled? ????

You are right and wrong. You can have modern tech to assist an election count or you can have a paper trail from the most remote regions. of Thailand. Thailand is still a basic country, it takes time to have a vote paper be held up and counted. And manipulated of course. But why act surprised? Everyone in Thailand knew the outcome, the rich rule and the poor are peasants
