MELBOURNE (Reuters) - A protester threw an egg at Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison at an election campaign event on Tuesday, grazing him in the head with it, footage on Australian television showed.

Security guards swiftly pounced on the female protester, who was wearing a beanie and casual clothes, and dragged her away.

Morrison rubbed his head briefly after the egg was thrown and then helped an elderly woman who was pushed to the floor in the scuffle.

"We will stand up to thuggery whether it's these cowardly activists who have no respect for anyone, or militant unionists standing over small businesses and their employees on work sites," Morrison said in a message on his Twitter feed.

The incident occurred during a visit by the prime minister to Albury, a constituency in New South Wales, where an independent candidate is the bookmakers' favourite as rural voters desert the government.

The woman later told reporters that her action "speaks for itself" and referred to Manus Island, in Papua New Guinea, where Australia has long detained refugees, according to a reporter with the Australian newspaper.

In March, a teenager smashed an egg onto the head of a controversial right-wing Australian lawmaker who had blamed New Zealand's mass mosque shootings on its immigration programme.

Excellent way to gain a few thousand extra votes for the Libs. Which, in a VERY tight election, might almost be enough to push the government across the line. Just needs the other 11 now ...

Just a slight correction. She did not throw an egg at the PM. She came up behind him and, egg in hand, smacked him on the back of the head. Stupid girl could not even do an egging properly.

She has been charged with assault and will face court.  The kid that egged Anning walked free.

He was only 17 but he should have received some punishment for assaulting a Senator.

I am sure the media's lauding of his actions contributed to this assault on the PM.

the egg therefore was just an unfortunately messy choice of how to interface her hand with his head.

The clip-over-the-earhole was in itself enough to warrant any Assault Charges.

The egg was just the icing on the cake

They called him egg boy and a large amount of money was raised on gfm for his unnecessary legal defence. It was claimed that the money was being donated to some charity by him, but who knows

A brief google search shows these alleged "refugees" at Manus island have been very naughty boys indeed. A shocking number of rapes, as well as widespread drug abuse, no doubt a lot of intolerant religious mumbo-jumbo as well. One wonders if this lefty egg throwing woman has any idea whatsoever about the reality of the people she wants let in to Australia with no questions asked? Rhetorical question, of course she doesn't. The best solution here is instead of bringing the Manus detainees into Australia and let loose, is to deport the egg thrower to Manus where she will get a harsh education.

I note left wing violence against political figures is on the rise recently. It was only last week another activist throw a milk shake over British folk hero Tommy Robinson. Quite how violence fits in with the tolerant liberal agenda is a mystery to me.

A lot are  also genuine refugees under the UN Refugee convention, which Australia is in contravention of.

Also some very right wing supporters beat up a reporter here at a political meeting of a right wing politician a few weeks ago.

Wonder the leanings of the person who threw milk over Robinson, since he was member of the Labor Party until a few days ago

Australia also has a policy of anyone who attempted to arrive by boat will NEVER be allowed into Australia,(irrespective of refugee status) arriving by plane does not carry the same discriminatory sanctions

My simple google search did not come up with any charges let alone convinctions of refugees at Manus islands. More advanced google searches did not unearth any either.

I never knew that cracking an egg over a politician in Australia was considered violent - as far as I knew, cracking an egg over someone's head in Australia was an example of good clean Aussie sport and fun!

First egging of a PM in Oz was back in 1917, Billy Hughes, during an attempt to have a plebiscite on conscription

This is correct. Saw the news footage. She practically clonked him one. Needs to be charged with stupidity first then next, a assault charge.

She was also found with cannabis on her, (note to self>> no cannabis when on egging run)

Throwing an egg or any other projectile at someone is assault in most civilized countries.

The increasing violence of the left pc liberals and their intolerance to any who won't submit to their views, and only their views is becoming a concern to anyone who supports real free speech, democracy and political tolerance.

Australia has seen an increase of physical violence from those supporting right wing Senator Anning towards reporters and those who have protested verbally towards him, several facing the courts on assault charges.

Faults on both sides.

Be a good idea to provide a link to your claims from a credible source. From memory there was one rape by a genuine refugee on Manus Island. Approx 80% of the prisoners on Manus have been vetted as genuine refugees and have been detained for years whilst waiting relocation to a host country.

www.refugeecouncil.org.au/operation-sovereign-borders-offshore-detention-statistics/

There have been a number of reports highlighting the impact of indefinite detention on the prisoners and poor conditions. In fact a number of the prisoners recently contracted  typhoid.

As per usual with right of centre members rabbiting on about the 'left', completely ignore  right wing extremism is the greater threat of violence in Western societies. e.g.

It's a great shame the cowardly Anning supporter who kicked the boy when he was on the ground and defenceless hasn't been identified and charged.

@dundee48. What's so funny about kicking someone whilst defenceless on the ground? Why do keep posting emoticons, rather than explaining yourself?
