Dukoral

Featured Replies

Has anyone taken Dukoral (Diarrhea/Cholera vaccine) in Thailand?  I am interested in knowing if it worked and what the pharmacy price in Thailand might be.

I took it on one occasion in the West for a planned stay in Thailand.

Two doses which need to be frigerated are required for 2 years protection cost about 100USD.

In 18 years I only ever had two mild food poisoning episodes and that was towards the end of that period.

And that was an egg and lettuce sandwich an airline meal and a bowl of rice from a hospital cafeteria.

I really don't know if it worked or not but I never got sick during the two year efficacy period.

I was always careful about eating out especially fish salads iced drinks etc .

I ate mainly fresh well cooked meals in food courts or restaurants never off the street.

Only about 50 effective after 6 months, and the incidence of cholera is extremely low in Thailand = per the CDC, no longer any active transmission.  Not a necessary or recommended vaccine for Thailand.

Maybe not necessary for many. But for me, I get sick on a regular basis and have been that way for 40 years.  I have always been careful with what I eat but have been caught by lettuce in a sandwich, fake bottled water, ice and who knows what else.  I stay well stocked with Imodium.

This vaccine is new to me and if it helps 50% of the time and is not overpriced, I will try it.  Cholera, I am no concerned about but it is a free part of preventing (some) TD.
