A retired policeman was murdered in a rented room he stayed with one of his five wives in Nakhon Pathom’s Muang district on Friday night, police said.

Weerachai Jirundorn, 75, a former officer with Muang Nakhon Pathom police, was killed inside his rented room in Moo 7 village in Tambon Suan Takrai.

His wife, Pornpen Phayabal, 51, told police that she went out for dinner and returned to the room to find Weerachai had been killed.

She said he had a big wound on his head as if he had been hit by a hard object and his neck had marks that indicated he might have been strangled with a cloth.

Pornpen said she earlier asked Weerachai to eat out with her but he wanted to stay home so she cooked him a meal and left. She returned to find him dead and the dinner was untouched.

Pol Col Piradej Charoendej, commander of the Muang Nakhon Pathom police station, said Weerachai had five wives, each of whom supports herself.

Piradej said Weerachai loaned money and police suspect the murder was motivated by a loan dispute. Jealousy wasn't an issue because all of his wives know one another and did not quarrel, he said.

Quite specific musings, is she ex-police as well?

When I got legally married in Thailand, I'm pretty sure I had to provide a legal document declaring I wasn't presently legally married to anyone else, and in some cases, even provide proof of legal divorce or otherwise from any prior marriages.

I wonder what exact kind of five "wives" this guy had in Thailand? The village wedding ceremony kind, but not the legally registered marriage at an amphur kind???

No such thing has having 5 wives in Thailand legally. Only one is allowed by law.  Any such mumbo jumbo by monks does not constitute a legal marriage.  May as well say someone had a mumbo jumbe service by monks so he is now married to a buffaloe, goat, cow, water monitor and an elephant and he calls them his "wives".  Complete and utter nonsense he had five wives. 1 wife 4 mistresses.

No doubt being an ex policemen he was an unregistered money lender to, in other words an illegal money lender.  Possibly , but not known yet, a loan shark.   If that is the case then perhaps all that mumbo jumbo he believed in "bit him in the bum", or rather on the head - Karma, poetic justice for him if indeed he was a loan shark.

Exactly and I wonder if that was his real legal wife or just one of his tarts he paid to service ? If it was then as he was a money lender perhaps she wanted to get her hands on his money . If not and it was one of the tarts, then seems like jealousy.   Anyway no loss for someone with his low morals.

Any children?  It is usual for a Thai male to move on at the first sign of Morning Sickness.

If I were Piradej, instead of surmising a rather vague "loan dispute" as murder motive, I'd actually investigate if those five wives have any "other husbands", with a particular focus on the ones hooked by Pornpen. All the wives "support themselves." Through what means? I am certain there are so many "puas" around that they'd put the deceased's own little collection of "mias" to shame.

But I am not Piradej.

It's only just occurred to me: How come all five wives were murdered in the same city?

You're right, the headline is quite ambivalent.
