Anti-junta activist Ja New attacked again by unidentified men

 

 

Well known anti-junta activist Sirawith Seritiwat, alias Ja New, was attacked by five unidentified men at a bus stop on Ratchadapisek road in Bangkok on Sunday night, which he later described as an attempt on his life.

 

The incident, which is not the first assault on Ja New, took place near the mouth of Soi Ratchadapisek 7 in Huay Khwang district at about 9pm, after he and about 10 members of the Startup People group launched a signature collection campaign, in front of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, to urge senators to abstain from the election of the Prime Minister in parliament this Wednesday.

 

After the attack, he managed to find his way to Huay Khwang police station to file a complaint and was rushed to the Police General Hospital by the police. Ja New told reporters, from his hospital bed on Sunday night, he believed his assailants had wanted him dead because they kept hitting him on the head with wooden clubs. He said he tried to escape from his assailants but stumbled because of the uneven footpath.

‘Democratic’ parties condemn attack on anti-military activist before PM selection vote

Politicians from the so-called “democratic camp” on Monday condemned an attack the previous night on a key anti-military activist.
 

Sirawit Sereethiwat, better known as “Jaa New” (Sergeant New), was attacked on Sunday night by a group of five to six men armed who used wooden sticks beat him mainly to his face and head. He said the attackers rode motorcycles and said nothing before hitting him.

 

“They looked like they were trying to kill me. I don’t know why they were so angry at me. I will never forgive them. And I ask the police to finish this case as soon as possible,” he said.

 

Sirawit, 27, said he would have to be more careful after the attack, which left him bruises and cuts to his face, lips, right ear and some other parts of his body.

 

The activist, who earlier led protests against the 2014 military coup and the ruling National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), has campaigned for the 250 junta-appointed senators to abstain during Wednesday’s parliamentary vote to select the next prime minister.

 

Most, if not all, of the senators are expected to vote in favour of General Prayut Chan-o-cha, the prime minister candidate of the Phalang Pracharat Party, to continue as the government head.

 

Poomtham Wechayachai, secretary-general of the pre-coup governing party Pheu Thai, on Monday condemned the attack on Sirawit.

“I strongly condemn the attack on Sirawit, or Jaa New, during his campaign against allowing senators to select General Prayut as the next prime minister,” Poomtham said in his Facebook post.

 

 

The politician asked if Thai society would allow “power-hungry people” to use “barbaric methods” in order to stay on in power. He added that people who beg to differ seemed to “have nowhere to stand” in this society.

 

Piyabutr Saengkanokkul, secretary-general for the Future Forward Party, also on Monday condemned the use of violence against Sirawit, which he said was aimed at creating an atmosphere of fear among dissidents.

 

“This was not the first time for use of intimidation, threats and violence against political dissidents,” the academic-turned-politician said in his Facebook message.

 

“No culprits have been arrested. Worse still, the dissidents are slapped with legal actions meant to block them from expressing their political views,” he said.

 

Sirawit’s mother Patnaree Charnkit said on Monday that she had often warned him to be careful following attacks on political activists. This was the first time he had been attacked so seriously, she added.

 

“The attackers didn’t seem to just threaten him or ‘give him a lesson’. They focused their attack on his head,” the mother said while visiting Sirawit at Mission Hospital.

 

She said his doctor told her that an initial examination showed the attack had not damaged Sirawit’s brain. However, as the activist had complained of dizziness, she wanted him to stay in hospital for another day.

The point is that one might expect them, by now, to be protesting in their MILLIONS (and I am not talking about violent protest; Gandhi solved that one decades ago with 'passive resistance'). Obviously it is not safe to protest alone (the present guy is immensely brave, stunningly so) or in small groups of hundreds or even thousands. No one here has ever claimed that lone individuals should protest out on the streets. That is - as mentioned - truly inadvisable.

 

But MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS?

 

Will never happen of course. I know Thais who are totally opposed to the junta and who support Thanathorn - but who are too scared even to join his Future Forward Party.

 

Says it all, I am afraid. It shows the levels of fear that now, spectre-like, stalk this land.

I agree & would love to witness this happening - But this is a country ruled by the military, they have long prevented people assembling to protest, they do it very well, the major protesters would have to descend on Bangkok on mass, they are prevented from doing this, look at all the military check points on the routes out of the NE for example, going back many years - they won't let them through. They have managed to turn the country into a military dictatorship - yet again -

Maybe he got a head make of steel. Does it matter. He got attacked by junta goons speaking out against the junta. Salted or pickled; Thailand is better than this without intimidation by the junta.

You do know the difference being attack and being in a fight. And you do know it’s a series of attacks dating back to the Park incident. It is a pattern and you can bet nothing will come out of the incidents even if there are CCTV evidence. And you know why. No?

he was attacked by junta voters, but by soldiers ordered by their superiors. Many times fingers were pointed to pravit, army commander. Voters do not attack opposite voters after the election, they might do that during or before election

IMO that was a warning rather than an attack caused to inflict real injury or death. Generally when attackers are silent throughout, they are maintaining discipline and following instructions. That in itself, the silence, will stay longer with the victim than if they were shouting and yelling during the attack.

PTP and their goons did more than their fare share of intimidation. And Thaksin used to slap law suits on people who said things against him. Just like Tarit tried to do on his behalf.

 

The PTP guy needs to be careful who he accuses of wrongdoing given the well known defamation laws.

I don't particularly like (and honestly, it does not matter whether I do, or not) any of the past protests (Suvarnabhumi, Ratchaphrasong and Lumpini, to name a few) as I find them disruptive at best but, if that is how it works in Thailand, then it is what it is. At least the people have a somewhat 'tolerated' channel to voice and show dissent in largely peaceful rallies. I think any hope of that is but gone now, since Uncle Supreme Leader and his band of draconian executors took over.

 

The worrying aspect of this is, something has got to give. Even a pressure cooker has a relieve valve. The pressure on Thai people will not abate. With the silencing of even mere voices of dissent, never mind actual protests, it is worrying where that pressure is going to be released. Also equally important, I guess, is 'when'. It is sad to see the increasing pace of Thailand's regression. Or are we at the beginning of a new chapter of Thailand - and what Thailand 'used to be' will be but just memories for some perched around an old pub table shooting the breeze about the 'glory days' of Thailand.
