Not unexpected, however, a sad day for Thailand.

  • It amazes me that an entire nation and even the world thought this was going to be a real election. This was a farce from day one.   It was so painfully obvious that I’m embarrassed for how

  • The Election was meaningless    If rules had been applied he would not be PM   Democracy in name only - unfortunately     and before anyone accuses me of anything -

Now this 'democratically elected' prime minister can enjoy being criticized, ridiculed and made fun of. This is a democracy after all........

Aloha,

Better than fish, better than Poi, General Prayer as Thais' next Prime Minister!

You're joking aren't you?

Democracy is NOT synonymous with development

True, but Thailand seems to get the worst of both alternatives (no democracy + crony capitalism).

I wonder what measures he will put in place to prevent that from happening. Step one, rig the election. Step two, retain Article 44 by another name. He has to, or he will literally be driven mad.

Yes they did. 50% of them chose it (over several years) and the rest let it happen.

All countries get the governments they deserve. That's because all governments - even the authoritarian ones - are the product of the local culture. If the people wanted to get rid of this mob, they could. But it would take courage, energy & sustained action.

Next time just forget an election and the lies, save the money and put it towards something useful. Sad and depressing day for Thailand.

Useful? like another useless submarine.....  Just imagine how much commission must be in a sub????

Quite right!

Democracy is no panacea. Western-type democracy is obviously not suitable for countries with different cultural aspects.

A democratic Singapore would not have been as successful as an authoritarian one.

What is shocking is that the Democrat party led by Abhisit decided to support Prayut.

Fact check on that statement wouldn't go amiss.

Thai submarines have only one purpose - to transport criminals, commoner or elitist,  (as deck cargo) away from the Kingdom.  ????????

Will a higher authority bless this nightmare on the Thai people, or will this higher authority be smart enough to put an end to it?

Will be interesting to see, but one thing I can say for sure, the more this whole charade has gone on, the more I've witnessed people online getting angry with him and mocking him.

Re-branding 44 may well stir even more hatred and ultimately be his undoing. Or, anger for a week or two and then back to apathy.

Farcical stuff, but to be expected. The country's slow but steady slide into the shitter has just been accelerated.

An inevitable (& planned) conclusion! Why would anyone be surprised? ????

And I bet that during the next six months little (apart from talking) or no effective action will be taken to reduce road trauma (AKA get the RTP to do their job effectively, in all enforcement areas).

What has reducing road trauma / deaths got to do with getting your snout into the trough - bugger-all...

Seriously, I don't know we expats bother with this anymore (myself included). None of us here saw anything different. The masses didn't object before and they won't now. The next thing that will happen is that courtesy and acceptance notes will fly in from other world leaders...and we expats will, of course, endorse their congrats...????????Hey fellas, what's with the rotten tomatoes, I was only joking,????

In history many Thais have been killed fighting for democracy. It is a very risky business. I wonder how many of the armchair warriors on here who blame the Thais for not rising up would be willing to go and risk their own lives if the same was happening in their own country. Willing to bet that most of you would leave it to someone else while you left it to somebody else.

They did, albeit in part by their apathy.

The Thai electorate supported the junta-drafted constitution (largely by not voting with only about a 60% turnout). Everything that followed through to the election of Prayut was predictable.

That is something to look forward to, former Khmer Rouge Foreign Minister, now Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has been in power for 34 years, maybe Thailand can look forward something similar here!

You're bang on the button! This guy is going nowhere for a very long time!

well that was a surprise......not

Twelve times there has been a successful military coup in Thailand since 1932.

Each one legitimized.

So no end in sight.

The Thais knew that the election of Prayuth was inevitable anyway. Look at the 250 unelected senators. The actions post election show what a farce it has been. The Thais are well aware of this.

Effectively, another coup!!

The two blocs also clashed several times when debating the 2014 coup. At one point, senator Seri Suwanpanont admitted that he would rather support a democratic dictatorship rather than a fake democracy.

oxymoron of the year, and he is literally supporting a fake democracy.

I always thought that the perfect form of government is a benign dictatorship. The catchphrase for this is “for the greater good” .
