I know this probably sounds redundant to many of you but here goes. I have lived in Thailand 9 yrs and my VISA is soon to expire. The lady at Immigration told me I can go to Laos and get  a 30 day stamp, and then another one after that. I live in Udon Thani and have never done a "visa run". Its 1 hour drive to Nong Khai, so I will drive there soon. My question: what do I need to take so all will go smooth? I just need some extra time to empty the house, then will be off to Vietnam end of Auguest.

Thanks in advance.

She is telling you to enter visa exempt. 30 days. This can be extended by 30.

You can obtain visa exempt entries twice per calendar year at border.

Take some cash just in case they wish to see it.

You will get a 30 day visa exempt entry that can be extended for 30 days at a immigration office for a fee of 1900 baht.

You need nothing more than your passport, a photo for the Lao visa on arrival form and 1500 baht or $30 to $42 US dependent upon your nationality for the Lao VOA fee.

Thankyou. OK, so do I need to return to Laos for the 2nd  30 days or take it to the Thai Immigration office here in Udon? I am US expat. OH, also, do I go at the end of my VISA or will they add the 30 to the end of my VISA? Thanks again....

I just spent 1 yr in Vietnam...congrats to you for choosing Vietnam, excellent choice.  You will have NONE of problems experienced in Thailand, and receive more genuine smiles and service.  Plus excellent and diverse food at the same price or less....and coffee!  Don't forget to try the egg coffee.

You will apply for a 30 day extension at the immigration office in Udon.

FYI you will pay $35 US for the Lao visa on arrival or 1500 baht since you are from the US.

Thanks fellas, its so much easier here, just putting the questions out here and getting experienced answers. better than watching 100 Youtube videos, that never seem to give the answer you need. Haha

Thanks Mike787..I agree,   I really love the beauty of Thailand (foods, easy, friendly people, beaches, islands, ect) . I didn't come here for the sex industry..I had a Thai wife for 8 yrs here, my 1st Thai wife was in the US a long time ago. She wanted to be American citizen, after 7 yrs, I decided I wanted to live here. But, things are changing in a way, here, that I don't want to be part of.  You can come here, support a wife, and maybe kids, but, if you don't pony up that money..well, lets just say "they don't care".  Time for new horizens. I definately know for sure, I don't want to go back to the US..that place is getting so "crazy". Mike, are you living in VN right now? I am bookmarking lot of Youtube vids..haha   It seems like a simple place for a simple guy.

Does anyone have a link to a forum here about VN? Need to get info on Banking, needs, ect and get that thing prepared for a smooth landing there.  I don't want to keep asking questions here.

Am still wondering if I will get my 30 days from the end of my VISA , or from when I cross the boarder...... Thanks in advance.

Before your current visa (i think you mean EXTENSION) expires go to laos. Assuming you have no reentry permit your current permission of stay will cease. You then simply present your pp at the border crossing and you will be given a stamp. Its a 30 day visa EXEMPT stamp.

Before that stamp expires you go to immigration and apply for extension (30 day). Depending how long you wish to remain you could do a second trip to border Laos and obtain a second visa exempt stamp. If extended the second one you can effectively remain 4 months. The 30 days starts from when you enter Thailand.

DrJack54, my 1 yr visa expires the 28 of June.  So, before the 28th, drive to laos, get my stamp. Then before that 30 days expired, I can go to the Thai Immigration here in Udon and get an additional 30 days? Then, before that expires, go back to Laos, for another Stamp for additional 30 days, before that expires, back to Thai Immigration for the final 30 days? That would be perfect, if I am understanding you correctly.

There was a thread maybe few months ago that had excellent info about just about everything to do with Vietnam. I go to Saigon every few weeks. One thing to note is that Vietnam does not offer "retirement visa". As an American you can obtain a 12 month multi entry visa. From memory it will cost you about 500usd all up. I may be wrong about that. A USA member can correct. I'm AU. All I can obtain is a 3 month multi entry. Hence I need 4 per year at ~70usd each. As in Cambodia etc you can obtain various visas for a " fee" via agents. Business visa etc even though you don't work. Residence certificate etc all fairly easy.

Yes, except I'm not sure where you apply for the extension. If I stated you need to go to CW in bangkok, that may be incorrect. An expert will be along to confirm.

As I wrote before he can apply for the 30 day extension at Udon immigration since that is where he is living.

Ubonjoe..now I'm confused.

Go to Laos to get a 30 day extention....after that 30 days, extent it another 30 days at Udon Immigration.?

At my last 90 day check-in at Thai Immigration, the lady told me to go to laos for a 30 day extention. She said I can do that 2 times.

You will not get a extension when your return from Laos. You will get a 30 day visa exempt entry.

Then you can apply for a 30 day extension of that 30 days at Udon immigration for a fee of 1900 baht. No need to do another crossing if you apply for the extension.

Thanks UbonJoe, very nice!

BTW, someone said a 1 ys Visa to VN was about $500. Not so, its about $150. Here is a  link for VISA letter on arrival for VN.

I'm already getting excited about that PHO. Haha    I used to enjoy this in Florida, yrs ago at a Vietnamese Resturant. Its gotta be the most perfect, complete meal around.  At 59 yrs old, 5'8", I weigh 79kgs. (I was a wrestler in my days, not a toothpick, 555) My older brother , still in the states, along with his wife, are pushing about 300lbs. The food there has become a "weapon" against the people. Believe it or not, I actually moved here for the food...you have to eat everyday, right? Whenever I had gone back, I would add 2 inches to the weist line, in a month. So sad....and many there think stuff from places like Dollar General is real food.

Thanks for everyones help..I appreciate chatting with decent gentlemen  who don't try to pounce on others, for a spelling error or any other lame thing.

OP if you are going to be in BKK a few days I would get a visa for Vietnam while there. It's easy to do it yourself or use a travel agent.  Then when you arrive in Vietnam you just cue up for immigration.
