Popular Post Jonathan Fairfield Posted June 25, 2019 Popular Post Posted June 25, 2019 German expat demands officials do something about noisey swallows Image: Banmuang Officials in central Prachuap Khiri Khan went to a three story property after complaints that the building was being used to attract swallows at night. The swallows - a protected species - would go to the building and the owner would harvest their nests to make the expensive "bird's nest" soup craved by many Asians. Neighbors had complained to the government watchdog Damrongtham about the noises at night used to attract the birds and the smell from polluted water that came from the building. Yesterday morning Saengpratheep Khunathimaphan from Damrongtham led a group of military, police, environmentalists and animal experts to the property in Soi Ran "Big Phone". A notice was left on the gate threatening further legal action. The owner and the manager were nowhere to be found - they had apparently flown the nest. A German man who lives next door told Banmuang that if the problem isn't sorted out within two months he will move elsewhere. The German man said he is sick to death of the problems caused by the birds, which include noise at all hours and a foul smell. He said that the birds shouldn't be allowed to nest in a building in a residential area. What a statement that is, swallows shouldn't be allowed to nest in a residential area! ???????????? Best stick a notice up telling them then ???????????????? <deleted> 5 4 1

To attract the birds they play swallow nesting sounds at twilight. Then every few months someone comes to collect the nests. Yes they are noisy and if the guano isn't collected it gets smelly and messy. Swallow condos are common in parts of Indonesia, we had one near us in Hat Yai until the neighbours complained and it was shut down. . 19 4

They also use a sound system to attract the birds. Very annoying even when you only drive by 5

trigpoint Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 There not swallows, there swiftlets, very noisy, usually in purpose built bird houses, their nests are harvested for birds nest soup. Very lucrative business.
Popular Post monkeycu Posted June 25, 2019 Popular Post Posted June 25, 2019 Later today the swallows will be making a complaint about a noisy German neighbour 1 3
TKDfella Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 I've seen plenty of Swifts around but I haven't a free flying Swallow yet. Going to take the police some time to track down those noisy swifts although they could try a traffic light section on the main road somewhere. ????

Someone put a building there to attract swallows thousands of them to get their nest. That is farming.. should farming be allowed in residential area's. Just wonder how nice you would be if a farmer set up shop with pigs next to your house for instance ? 6

It's not nature. In that area there are many such buildings set to attract the birds. They have loudspeakers running at all times mimicking the birds' sounds so the birds go in to nest. The owners then harvest the nests to make and sell the soup. 4
Letseng Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 Germans are great complainers. I lived there for a while. 1

You're right they can't do this in a residential area. She called the general gov. help line and they came in about a week and shut it down. The bird noises were keeping little ones awake was the main complaint. 2
