Two African men have been arrested along with 533 grams of crystal meth or "ice" in Bangkok's Suan Luang district.

Tourist Police Bureau chief Pol Lt-General Teerapol Kuptanon told a press conference on Friday that following a tip-off about drug delivery at the mouth of Soi On Nut 25 on Thursday, police arrested Zambian national Micheal Phiri, 39, at 2am in the area along with 515 grams of "ice".

Police then searched Phiri's rented room in Prawet district and found another 18 grams of "ice" hidden in the ceiling of the toilet and apprehended the room occupant Nigerian man Steve Chidi Vaskee, 37, who did not have a valid Thai visa.

Phiri reportedly confessed to drug trafficking and said the drugs were meant to be delivered to a Thai women whom he hired as a drug mule for Bt60,000 to move narcotics to another country.

The woman was supposed to place condoms in two tube-shape packages and insert them in her body to avoid detection while travelling, he told police.

He claimed that he received the drugs from a Nigerian man identified only as Osaka whom he connected with via WhatsApp.

Teerapol said the two suspects had entered Thailand in 2014 initially with the tourist visa before they applied for the language teacher visa. They have been in the country illegally since that expired.

The "ice" was of good quality and could fetch at least Bt2 million in a third country, Teerapol said.

The RTP always seem to have rely on tip-offs to do most of their 'detective' work. Whether it's drugs, foreigners not filling in paperwork or stolen goods or money.

I can't remember the last time I heard any other way the police caught anyone.

Happy to help your short term memory problem. Go to the top of the page, find the search box, type "checkpoint" and hit the search symbol.

Like Thailand. Oh, people would never use meth there.

With 40MM tourists thronging Thailand every year there are sure going to be a good number of international criminals making their way here, whether they be drug kingpins, dealers, couriers, human traffickers, loan sharks, etc. The police have a great challenge, besides dealing with the local criminal element.

Was that glued into their passports by an Asian looking guy for 5,000 baht, by any chance.

Hence the increased scrutiny of everyone. Thailand is still a magnet for a lot of very dubious people despite the changes it's making at its borders and within its country. I expect it will become increasingly difficult to come here to do what you ever you want, just as it has in most countries.

Since when do the Thai police rely on detective work, they can't even direct traffic properly.they solely seem to rely on squealers and check points or luck when some brainless criminal crashes a car full of drugs.thai policing is very much different where they force a confession out of you by threatening you with a double sentence unless you admit to the crime.

Visas are irrelevant for criminals....

The rich criminals can buy their visas..

The poor criminals can enter on a visa exempt and stay for many years depending how their luck runs.....

And even if they get kicked out they can always take a swim across the Mekong....

All of these endless visa crackdowns have little effect on criminals....

Sounds similar to many countries. If there's a will people will find a way. But like most countries they do not give up trying to do what they can to stop it and I don't expect this country to quit trying to control it either.

They are the small frey. A few days ago Thais was caught smuggeling more than 500 kg, these guys was smuggeling 0,5kg. In no country does outsiders control the wholesale smuggeling of drugs out of that country. A few years ago a South African woman was caught as a drug mule. But she was tipped off by her handlers, 4 others mules slipped passed while she was arrested. So the game is we give you 0,5 kg but we get 20kg out.

I don’t believe this rubbish. All the Africans I know in Bangkok are honest businessmen.

Why would anybody "confess" to drug trafficking if that confession really kicks their ars_s?

Of course, did he blame somebody else, in this case, a Thai woman? What country would that be? The guy's full of shi_e.

It's very sad that all the colored people in Thailand are seen as drug dealers. Which includes nice guys from the States and elsewhere.

But being white here isn't really a privilege. We "may spend all our cash", but then it's time to go back and make some more.

Nope, this country isn't the same as it was 17 years ago when I decided to settle down here.

And it's getting worse, basically by the hour.

The job of the RTP is really quite easy. They can simply arrest any long staying Nigerian, and you can rest assured they will be involved in one serious crime or another.

I've seen two of them making a deal while Thai guys near Nana sold child porn and the cop looked out for foreigners who dropped their fags.

The cop didn't see them and guess why? The cops ( many, not all) are involved in all business and that's not just on islands.

Wrong. Anywhere else on the planet they investigate and do not only catch people on tipoff, which is clearly the case here.

No drug dealer is caught after investigation, but only after a snitch gave his name.

Good ol' TVF. Never lets you down. Here's the state of play:

Africans - All criminals -                        1.49bn people

Chinese - All crap in the street -             1.42bn people

Indians - All stink and share one drink -   1.36bn people

                                                           ________

                                                            4.27bn people

Xenophobia is alive and well. Need an angle on Brazilians and Indonesians, the hatred can go from 55% of the planet to 71%.

Get to it boys. You can do it.

Thailand wants more Africans, Arabs, and Chinese anyway.  Why arrest them, give the asylum and a Thai passport - all of them.
