A peat swamp forest in Chumphon’s Lang Suan district caught fire on Monday evening, causing heavy smoke to spread throughout the area and affecting people living nearby.

At press time, fire fighters were still unable to control the raging fire.

Sant Chimhad, head of the Tambon Bang Maprao Administrative Organization, said he was alerted at 5.30pm that fire had broken out in the Na Phaya-Bang Maprao Peat Swamp Forest, which straddles Moo 13 village in Tambon Bang Maprao and Moo 17 village in Tambon Na Phaya.

He said three villages in the two tambon were severely affected by smoke and this was causing breathing difficulties in young children and elderly residents.
