BANGKOK (NNT) - Police and the Department of Fisheries have jointly launched a special operation against illegal fishing off Ranong province. Given such operations are conducted in line with the government’s policy to meet an ASEAN position on the issue, illegal fishing in Thai waters is sure to gradually decline.

Pol Lt Gen Charuwat Waisaya, commissioner of the Royal Thai Police’s Legal and Lawsuit Office and chairman of a subcommittee under the Command Center for Combating Illegal Fishing, visited Ranong to follow the special operation. Last month, the police and officials of the Department of Fisheries arrested 66 illegal trawlers, 59 of which had been brought into Thai territorial waters from abroad.

The authorities have cracked down on illegal fishing, reducing the illegal fishing activity from 3,270 cases in 2016 to 958 cases in 2017, 574 cases in 2018 and 333 cases in 2019. Last May, a boat named Chokchai Navi 35 was seized with over 500 million baht in cargo aboard.

Will this stunt include Thai vessels, or just those from neighboring countries?

Last May, a boat named Chokchai Navi 35 was seized with over 500 million baht in cargo aboard. something not fishy about this one !

This is not to clean up the Thai fishing industry.

This is to keep Thailand from getting a red card from the international fishing community.

If they get that there will be an embargo on exports and another country like Malaysia will have to supply an outlet path - at a price - and they don't want to share the profits.

It also uses slave labor on the boats and we all know what happened to the last top cop that looked into that.  He is now living in asylum in Australia.....

Yes to both.

Even transshipping transfers made at sea from foreign vessels to Thai vessels will be monitored.
