THAI DIVORCEE BRUTALLY MURDERED BY SUSPECTED KHMER MAN

A lovesick man pined to live with the murdered woman, Miss Surin Hwardputae, but she preferred to stay with her son; a fateful decision which, unfortunately, as it transpired spelled her downfall.

At 1.20 pm on March 14th, Police Warrant Officer Supachai Pueykaewkham received notification that a Thai woman had been murdered in her rented room at 112 Moo 3, Thambon Pong, Banglamung District. The police, led by Police Colonel Nit Witinangtakit, accompanied by volunteers from the Sawang Boriboon Rescue Team and a doctor from Banglamung Hospital rushed to the scene of the crime to find Miss Surin Hwardputae, aged 42, dead on the floor of her room, in front of the bathroom.

Her body was drenched in blood with multiple stab wounds indicating a brutal knife attack had just occurred. Her stomach was impaled by a knife with a twelve inch blade, with her intestines exposed. The knife, it transpired, actually belonged to Miss Surin.

She was wearing a yellow shirt and black trousers and on both her wrists were old scars indicating that she had probably attempted suicide in the past.

The police inquired of local residents to see if any of them had witnesswd the murder and a Miss Wipar Lhaonuad came forward. She happened to live nearby Miss Surin in the seven roomed terraced property. She told the police that she had earlier heard scuffling and extremely loud voices coming from the room as though an argument was in progress. Not being able to stand the uproar, she ran to find her husband, a government employee at his place of work, Pong Sub-District Administration Building.

Returning to her room, later, she went to find out about Miss Surin and found her lying dead on the floor. She, accordingly, notified the police. After that Miss Surin’s son, Sittichai Binyeeharasun, aged 21, a technician from Banglamung Cable TV Company, returned home. A co-worker at Banglamung Cable TV had apparently informed him that his mother had been killed and he, consequently, rushed home to find out the truth of the matter. When he saw the gruesome, blood bespattered scene, he cried out “That’s my mother!”

Sittichai had lived with his mother at 112 Moo 3, after his parents had divorced some considerable time before. He told the police that he suspected the murderer was a security guard of an apartment in Soi Banglamung 14, a Mr. Yeung. Checking Yeung’s room, next door to the murdered woman, the police found personal effects such as clothing and other items, which they will keep for investigation.

Sittichai said that he had knew Yeung, a tall, thin, dark-skinned individual, looking very much like a Cambodian. He knew that this individual was besotted with his mother and wanted to move in with her, but she was unwilling. Consequently, not being put off, Yeung moved into the next door apartment.

Through the local network of neighbours spreading the news, a local song taaw driver came forward and reported that he had earlier been hired by a person matching the description of the Cambodian, with scars and blood stains on his body, who he had taken to Suthawat Temple. When the song taw pulled up outside the temple, the passenger beat a hasty retreat without paying. He has since disappeared without trace.

The police suspect that it was either a crime of passion, or that he had merely wished to rob her. The police are following up the case.
