Help! I'm Very Confused About Add 0ns For Internet Explorer

Recommended Posts

I recently had to re-install windows on my second PC, and since then have been beusy re-installing all my software, and downloading programmes form the Internet, etc.

I use Firefox as my main browser, but also occasionally use IE, particularly to monitor my Ipstar connection, as the Ipstar website is not supported by Firefox.

For some reason I don't understand, my IE (7 I think) has no 'add ons' and the icon and programme list says as much. Every time I use it, I get a warning page telling me that IE it is currently running without "add ons".

Now without these Add ons I can't get the graphics on the Ipstar page, so it's useless. When I go to the Ipstar website on IE I get a message telling me that I need IE 5!! But I have IE 7, with no add ons.

I have tried and tried and tried all kinds of ways to download an add on but nothing happens. Nothing gets downloaded. I have tried to download the free Adobe flash player, which is one of the add ons - but nothing happens. I have changed the security settings in Internet Explorer to admit such downloads, but still nothing.

And there seems to be dozens of add ons. Which ones do I need? All very confusing.

Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong, or how I can solve the problem, and which add ons I need to run some of the web sites, like Ipstar?

Thanks

UPDATE:

I have logged onto the Microsoft update page, and I get the message: "Install the Active control Required to View the Website"

I am then told to R click the information Bar and install Active X control. But I can't do this as I don't have it on my R click menu. The ActiveX control is not there, and there is no menu as described.

Any ideas anyone?

top right corner , tools , internet options , programs , manage add ons ................. :o

Been there, done that - about 10 times or more.

Under the 'show' drop down box "Downloaded ActiveX controls (32-bit)", there's nothing listed (blank screen). But on my other PC, there's a load of Java Plug in ActiveX controls listed.

There's something wrong but I don't know how to fix it. I've tried downloading IE 7 again, but I can't because I've already got it installed.

I tried to remove it but was warned that a whole load of programmes I have installed will be affected if I remove it.

Any suggestions?

Thank you for all that, and I appreciate your time.

Unfortunately I'm going round in circles and going nowhere. After considerable trouble - God knows why? (when I tried to download, it wouldn't and I was referred to messages that didn't appear etc), but I've finally got 3 Java Plug-ins installed by using the manual download facilities,, and they are listed in the screen on the drop down box previously referred to. And they are shown as "enabled".

However it hasn't made any difference to my IE. Everytime I use it, I get a page with the message "Internet Explorer is currently running without add-ons" and a tool bar that says "Internet Explorer is currently running with add-ons disabled" but I can't see any way to enable them, and the graphics won't work.

There's something funadamentally wrong somewhere, but I have no idea how to fix it. I can't remove it and re-install it without losing all my other programmes so I am stuffed.

My other PC works fine on IE 7.

sorry mate ,

getting out of my depth now ,

you could try reinstalling IE ??

but I'll admit to clutching at straws now ...................

try ACOO browser. It's mostly based on IE but a bit better. It's free Achoo without the H. ( I would guess that your install of windows went badly and the problem is not really IE)

In Internet Options, Advanced you can try Reset to default if you're going round in circles. Check your Security Settings again while you're at it, maybe you have them set too high. I don't use IE much but l don't understand why you're getting prompted to install add ons all the time. I took a look at my add ons and all l have are a couple for Skype, one Java plug-in 1.50_03 and Shockwave Flash. Never had a problem when downloading or displaying pages.

If all else fails set a restore point, then delete Java and Flash from "add or remove programs" and download again the latest version. You might have different versions causing a conflict but make sure you set a restore point as Java can be a large download. If you download it again then check Windows Update for any patches. I'd delete IE myself and reinstall it while you're at it but save your Favorites first.

If you are using IE 7, just click tools and scroll down to where it says manage add-ons, and then just click to enable or disable add-ons. It's right there in your list of tools, no need to go into internet options. That will take you where you want to go, and just click to enable them again.

Thanks mate, that was it.

I had been looking on the programme list from the start menu and found IE (without add-ons), which is the one I've been trying to use.

I have just opened Windows Explorer and looked in the programme files on my C drive and found another IE, possibly a different version but I don't think so, but anyway without the 'No add-ons' notation.

There must have been a conflict by having two IE downloads on the same m/c. I clicked on the IE icon listed in the programme file and everything works fine :D

All the plug-ins and add-ons were there all the time, which explains why I couldn't download them again.

I've wasted nearly a whole day trying to sort this, so thanks for all the suggestions.

BTW, Higgy, the menu option for enabling /disabling add-ons was blanked out so I couldn't use it. That's what was driviung me crazy - all the obvious fixes just weren't working.

I guess I'll chalk it up to experience.

Sorry for being a pain

Good you got it sorted.

If you ever want to know the exact version of just about any software you have opened one way is to click Help on the toolbar and select 'about'

I think I have the same problem:

I found two different versions on my (new laptop) computer in 'Program Files':

1. 6.0.6000.16386 281 Kb -ieuser.exe-

and

2. 7.0.6000.16386 609 Kb -iexplore.exe-

Could it be that -having these both versions- this slows down my IE Internet browser (and therefore TV is so slow to open its pages...?)

Sorry, for being such a digibete... :o

I don't know if having 2 versions of the same program is the reason why TV is slow. Seems pointless though having both as important updates might be added to one version and not the other, plus it could be confusing. I'd be making a system restore point, saving a copy of Favorites and noting any other vital settings, then delete the old version from "add or remove programs" and see how you go. The IE7 version you have must be very recent so leave that alone for now. When you installed the later version l'm surprised the previous one wasn't overwritten.

If you want to try speeding up Thai Visa use Firefox or Opera, not IE.

In principal IE 7 should 'erase' IE6 during it's installation on XP. The reason for this is that IE6 is 'part' of the OS and IE7 is a separate application, just like others. This is, in part, how Microsoft reduces risk. If you download and installed IE7 from MS then there should be no conflict, but if it came frm Yahoo or elsewhere there may be a bug in the installation.

On that basis, you may need to reinstall IE7 fully, which will remove IE6 components.
