will2020 Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 hello, i am a Canadian citizen married to a Thai and we are both living in Canada for the last 9 years. we just had our son born in Canada. i want to ask about his legal rights of the Thai citizenship. is there a time limit on when we have to register him at the Thai embassy in Canada, or he can do that and get his passport when he is 18 ? if we register him now and got him a thai passport, but he is living in Canada, does he need to do the army when he is 18?
ubonjoe Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Best to do the birth registration as soon as possible to establish his Thai nationality. Life can have unexpected turns that could cause him problems getting it done later. Registering his birth at a embassy or official Thai consulate does not make him liable for being drafted at the age of 21. Only being registered in house book here makes him liable and it is possible to get a waiver from it if he is not living here. I have moved your topic to the family and children forum since it is not visa related.
