Power of Farang! Celebrity English teacher claims improvements on the way at Suvarnabhumi

"Farang Power" in effecting change in Thailand is now very much in the news.

A well-known Australian living in Thailand who complained about the long queues to get into Thailand has said that improvements are on the way.

This comes as a concerned group of foreigners in Isaan has started an online petition for improvements in time consuming immigration procedures.

Andrew Biggs, from Brisbane who has been in Thailand for around three decades, went on Twitter a couple of weeks ago to complain that the airport was the "Gateway to Hell".

Reporting in his Sunday column Mr Biggs said that he had tried to make amends for his outburst next day amid an avalanche of comments blasting both immigration and himself.

Then he was called in by immigration. Some friends joked that they would have his record collection if he was deported...

But it all turned out happily for Mr Biggs who has a business teaching English.

He said that he met Pol Col Choengron Rimpadee, the deputy commander of immigration who explained the situation.

Pol Col Choengron said that Mr Biggs' complaint was not the first they had received: "The truth is, we have people complaining all the time, including phu yai," he said.

"We are very aware of the situation."

Mr Biggs wrote that the officer told him that immigration had two things they must keep in mind - safety and convenience.

While they need to get tourists through as quickly as possible this could not be at the expense of sacrificing national security.

With 53 million lost passports around the world Mr Biggs quoted the immigration official as saying: "That means there are a lot of imposters out there, and they like to come to Thailand".

But Mr Biggs reported good news with promises that Suvarnabhumi is increasing the number of lanes and officers present.

He claimed that the number of officers would be increased from 800 to 1,000 and there would be 12% more counters in use.

Amid other measures Mr Biggs said that those with permanent residence would be able to use automatic gates for Thai people if they register at the airport.

Mr Biggs implied that he has Permanent Residency in the kingdom. He was writing in his Sunday column in "Brunch" magazine that had the headline:

" "All's Well That Ends Well" - airport 'kerfuffle' leads to positive exchange, possible improvements at immigration".

This morning Thaivisa reported that an expat group has launched an online petition calling for TM.30 to be scrapped.

From the OP "Reporting in his Sunday column Mr Biggs said....."

Would that be his column in the Bangkok Post?

Yes. No links to it allowed on here. Cutting and pasting selected sections, however, is apparently OK.

Good job Mr Biggs. Suck it up, get humble and do some Public Relations, 'shill' work for Immigration. That has to help with your VISA status. And no more of those unscripted outbursts ok. Heh.

Bingo.

Sorry - nothing new, did that when the auto gates were first introduced

How do non-permanent residents (such as elderly retirees) go about doing that?

Who does one speak to?

Are there automated gates at airports other than Cobra Swamp ... such as Chiang Mai?

I guess when paying your teachers only 40-45k and a whopping 25hrs a week incl Sat you get to take nice international trips and come back and gripe about the hired help and staff.

Think most of his posts are for 40k. Must be dead set on scooping up the best teachers in Bangkok at these salaries.

“Called in by immigration”

For what!?

Seriously, can anyone in this country accept constructive criticism at all?

No! Not even the word criticism is allowed here.

More like a grovelling back tracker than having any 'power'. That TM30 petition will probably never even get an answer.

'

Absolutely, but we knew this would happen.

Interesting to see TV copyright an article they have cut and pasted from yesterday's Bangkok Post. How does that work?

Shame that Andrew Biggs didn't cover TM30s or 90 day reporting during his meeting with Immigration. I suspect the meeting was more a case of attitude adjustment for him after describing Thailand as Hell.

Andrew Biggs is on eggshells, he has not done the required amount of kissing ass as yet.

No chance he is going to further rock the boat and mention either TM30 or 90 day reports and don't even mention that phones go unanswered, or their website sucks and isn't working!

Next time he is in the queue, he can eat some of that humble pie stored in his hand luggage, while he is awaiting admittance to the Kingdom.

Or that for accomplishing any given task at Immigration, there are probably a dozen or more different procedures/documents required among all the various different offices, with many setting their own local rules/requirements that don't match with what others are doing elsewhere.

It's getting to the point where it's pretty hard to actually hand out any accurate Immigration advice here, because it's always with the caveat... "but that rule/requirement/documents may well be handled/enforced entirely differently at your local Immigration office."

Something seems really wrong there. Isn't the minimum for a Westerner to get a work permit 50,000 baht/month?

you need to read up a bit more on the subject.

there are different minimums depending on nationality, and for teachers it's different too.

I actually did all my documents perfectly and triple checked them before going to Immigration for my yearly retirement. The documents were crisp, clean and in good order.

They nearly totally re did them all on scruffy pieces of poorly copied papers and just said to me sign! No way was I getting ' into it with them ' as I purely wanted what I went for and so just played along and got what I wanted.

You are spot on though, the orders come down from the top, it then seems to be up to the interpretation of the individual boss of each immigration office how these are enforced.

Interesting and completely off topic is this now, but this type of ' left hand not knowing what the right is doing '  is exactly what was said during the days of Pol Pot and the crisis of events between 1975-79 and how the genocide started.

They said that orders were issued by highly educated people at the top of the regime. It was then passed through different hands and to people of different educational backgrounds right down to those enforcing the rules, laws and regulations.

They say by the time it reached those in the field as in the Khmer Rouge soldiers or footmen, most of whom had no education at all, it had no resemblance to what was initially ordered, hence the genocide. By the time it had got back to the top, it was all underway and too late to stop the speeding train.
