My young son and I are US citizens, on Non-O dependant visas for 1 year.  We are planning a trip back to the US later this year.  Our visa doesn't expire until February of next year, so we will get a re-entry permit before we leave.  When we come back into Thailand, my son's passport will only have about 4-5 months on it before it expires (not enough time in US to renew).  I know you can't apply for and get a visa with less than 6 months on a passport, but what about if you already have the visa? Will there be problems coming back into Thailand?

Obviously we can get a new one here in Bangkok before we leave for our trip, but we would prefer to get the most time out of it and wait to renew until early next year.  Any thoughts please?

Thanks in advance.

I had same situation with ed visa, I coming back thru Nong Khai border with re-entry permit and passport was less than 6 months. IO on desk declined my passport, I asked another officer and she stamped my passport but asked me to change passport ASAP.

Immigration at an airport would allow entry with less than 6 months remaining on a passport.

But the airline is likely to be the one that could refuse it. You should check with the airline.

It would be best to get a new passport before leaving for your trip. It only takes about 2 weeks at the US embassy to get one (I'm assuming you are from the US).

His visa would remain valid in his old passport and he could show both passport on entry to the country to use it.

I once returned with 4 or 5 months left on my passport (had B visa). IO officer gave me a hard time but let me in after I said I was going to apply for a new passport shortly and had to go to work the next day. Now I renew passport 10 months before expire to play it safe.

Airline gave me hassle too.

As a general principle, never rely on a passport with less than six months validity. It can seriously affect travel plans. Indeed, some countries will not even allow you to transit through their airports unless your passport has six+ months validity.

No worries, just bring the old passport with the visa and make sure that the new passport mentions the visa in the old one. Worked for me (Dutch passport)
