BANGKOK, 3rd August 2019 (NNT) - The latest estimate from the University of Thai Chambers of Commerce (UTCC) shows the drought disaster this year has affected some 1,330 square kilometers of farmland, most of which is rice farms, with initial damage estimated at about 10 billion baht.

The University of the Thai Chambers of Commerce (UTCC) has conducted a survey on this year’s drought disaster, compiled from agricultural government agencies and private firms with 109 data samples nationwide. The survey has concluded the agricultural sector has been affected the most from the disaster, especially in the northern and northeastern region, affecting farmer’s yields and incomes.

According to data from the Department of Agricultural Extension as of 1st August 2019, 1,341 square kilometers of farmland has been affected by the drought disaster this year, most of which is rice farms at 656 square kilometers with damage estimated at 7.5 billion baht, followed by maize farms, sugar cane for factories, and tapioca, raising the overall damage estimate to 9.8 billion baht.

UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting’s (CEBF) Director, Thanawat Polvichai said today that the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has lifted the disaster affected area status in most places, leaving only one province remaining, which is expected to help alleviate the crisis thanks to the government’s water management and rainmaking operations. However, the center expects the damage to reach 18 billion baht should the crisis continue for another month.

The overall damage is expected to escalate to 37 billion baht should the drought extends to September, as the wet season rice cultivation cycle would be affected; that would lower expected Thai economic growth to 2.9 percent from 3 percent.

The Thai Chamber of Commerce Vice Chairma, and central region economic development committee chairman Jit Siratranont, agree that wet crop rice cultivation could be saved should the rain start to fall during this period, adding that the government should urgently provide farms with the necessary support and stimulate the economy in various respects, as the drought if prolonged, will affect the grassroots economy in addition to a slowdown in the export sector.

Good news for the farmers as they can now partake in their favourite pass time and burn the fields all year und.

there have been farmers in Thailand for more than a few years.  stop blaming Thai farmers.

and I am a Amerikeen farlang who has never farmed anything, Earl Butz under the Nixon administration told everybody to 'get big or get out'.  yet I burn trash everyday.  where I live there has never been trash pickup.... in many more than a few years.  billions and billions actually!

higher temps as a metric and "dryness" even when in a neutral ENSO condition now are more related to your "burning" narrative than you may might even begin to imagine.   a very "good" recent read on this is Mandy Freund et. al. in Nat Geoscience, May 2019.  connect the dots to electric power and how to deal with dryness and smoke and heat on a scale never seen in southeast Asia.  way long before any "ice melting" in 2100 something, which is another very popular narrative that we love to tell each other.  don't we?  or that climate refugees are "Mexican Rapists" and all sorts of bad people from South Amerikee.   short term, in the next 10 years.... Trump knows this... the current rainfall projections for large swaths of South America and most of Mexico in the next 1o to 15 years.  not 2100 something.  duh.

the Trumps own golf resorts, hotels and are from New York City where we would still be making Charles Bronson movies if it were not for tourism.... which has Climate Change written all over it.  Donald Trump knows about Climate Change.  he picked a great political issue, but it is one that will get even bigger than it already is.  and if you were a farmer, you would know this in your bones.  drought during ENSO events, which we are not in yet in Thailand. and for South America and Mexico, notwithstanding what ENSO conditions are in play.... more frequent droughts almost all the time.   we here are blessed by the Himalayas and thank god will continue to be, but it won't be all fun all the time.  get ready.

Trump will not speak on this directly in public.  maybe not even to his 3rd or 4th wife... let alone anywhere near anyone who might taddle on him.  which includes just about everyone so he keeps it close to his chest.  yes?  wanna bet?  I am.

Be careful to let people know what you know, as you might become a mark.

Makes that over rated 11 day songkran festival look rather ridiculous..

It's ok to hate it but flushing a toilet daily uses more water than the splashing. If you're concerned, just don't flush.

A disaster hey for 1330 sq kilometers costing around 10 billion baht.   Well lets look at this closer. firstly how many of the government and/or the Elite actually own some of that 1330 sq Km ? As that may explain what is going on.

1330 Sq Km is is  831,250 Rai. Now if this claimed drought has cost what is claimed to be 10 billion baht perhaps they are looking to compensate those poor Thai farmers ? yes that's right members of the government/Elite who actually own much of that 1330 Sq Km.

So compensation per Rai would be  12,030 baht. Not bad for some of the government /Elite owning many 100's of hectares of land is it ?
