arfandy Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 I recall that ASEAN tourists are able to use their homecountry driving license among ASEAN countries. I encountered this when i was driving from Bangkok to North and was stopped by the police officer at Phrae Checkpoint. He asked for my driving license and i showed him my Indonesian license. Then he took my license to his "supervisor" and couple minutes later he told us "drive safe" without much of questions, did not even bother to ask for passport, visa, or car registration book (car was rental). This happened on first week of June 2019. So, do Asean citizens still need to obtain Thai/International driving license in Thailand?

fulhamster Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 On the other side of the coin, is it legal to drive in other ASEAN countries using a Thai licence ?

Ctkong Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 My girlfriend uses a Thai driving license when in Malaysia. It is valid since the particulars are in English. I understand only those licenses with particulars in their country script as well as also in English are acceptable.
Ctkong Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 I hav been driving in Thailand for past 25 years using my Malaysian driver license. No problem with the police. But I also have a IDP which I use for rental cars in case insurance claim becomes messy without one. Especially in other more under developed countries like Laos, Myanmar.
Charlie Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 I am a Malaysian staying in Thailand. I have a Malaysian Driving Licence. Can I drive a Thai registered car in Thailand using my Malaysian Driving Licence ? Your kind advice is much appreciated. Thanking you all in advance.

All ASEAN citizens are able to freely use their driving license in ASEAN countries as long as your drivinf license is still valid
