Phoenix still up for grabs in Phuket – AMLO still seeking a buyer

The Thai Anti Money Laundering Office is still trying to auction off the Phoenix, the 30 metre tour boat that sank in July 2018, causing the drowning of 47 Chinese tourists off Phuket’s south east coast.

A meeting was held by AMLO officials at the Phuket Provincial Hall this morning to discuss the auction of the boat. Starting bid is 900,000 baht.

There are also other items seized in the raid of the shelf company that ‘owned’ the boat.

The AMLO officials claim they discovered the operators of the boat had laundered more than 1 billion baht.

So what’s on sale? The Phoenix which is 30 x 6.5 metres with associated equipment. Other accessories include a fully equipped ‘metal’ (presumably aluminium) boat that is 36 x 8 metres with a starting price of 8 million baht.*

There’s also a King Long brand tour bus with a starting price of 700,000 baht. The AMLO already welcomed auctioneers to observe the products yesterday.

The vessel has failed to attract any interest since the AMLO said they needed to dispose of the vessel to offset storage and shipyard costs. The boat remains a forlorn wreck sitting in the Rassada shipyard to the east of Phuket Town.

Given its association with the death of 47 Chinese souls the wreck is unlikely to attract any interest from either Thai or Chinese investors whose belief in ghosts remains a strong cultural negative.

PS. If they’re really that keen on finding a buyer, at least they could give the wreck a pressure wash.

*During the reporting following the sinking of Phoenix there were reports that the shelf company, that owned the Phoenix, also had another vessel under construction at the time

The appearance  of the boat really shows a lot about the government's attitude about the whole incident.

they couldn't give that boat away

take it out to sea and sink it

you have to question the motive for raising it in the first place - should have left it where it was

could be a good long term investment (sarcasm ) since TAT is introducing visa free for the Chinese, sure they must be expecting high numbers of Chinese tourists 555

How many have died in that one?

Love the way they say it's 'up for grabs' as if it's some sort of wonderful bargain !

THey should start with a price of 8000 baht not 8 million then someone might take it for scrap as that's all that that vessel is good for.

Apparently, it was considered as evidence.

Maybe the Indonesians will be interested and turn into a ferry!

AMLO need to do the decent thing and clean the " Phoenix " of all contaminates and tow it into the Ocean, to be sunk.

This will give a fitting shrine for the 47 poor souls that lost their lives on this Vessel.

What a joke ???????? they will have to pay someone.  Even if it was running-so many died on it-unreal

900K for that pile of %&*@ ... no way, and the locals will think that it's haunted up the gazzoot. Might as well try selling that land in Korat where the hotel collapsed. Sadly, on a more serious note, it just shows the indifference of the authorities here as that thing should have just been quietly cut up for scrap and let drift into history rather than digging it up again and again.

SOLD...They got 905,000 for it.
