UK politicians do not get to choose which votes they respect - Johnson's top adviser

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson believes politicians do not get to choose which votes they respect, his senior adviser Dominic Cummings said on Wednesday, a pointed remark aimed at lawmakers who have vowed to prevent a no-deal Brexit.

Johnson has promised to take Britain out of the European Union on Oct. 31, with or without an exit deal, potentially setting himself up for a major clash with lawmakers in parliament who have said they will try to stop a no-deal exit.

“The most simple thing is the prime minister believes that politicians don’t get to choose which votes they respect, that is the critical issue,” Cummings, the mastermind behind the 2016 vote to leave the EU, told Sky News.

One route being considered is seeking to collapse the government and force an election via a no confidence vote, but Cummings is reported to have told ministers that Johnson could simply choose to hold such an election after Oct. 31.

Conservative lawmaker Dominic Grieve, one of the key proponents behind efforts to block a no-deal, said earlier this week that Cummings did not understand how the British constitution worked and that Johnson would not be able to block an alternative government being formed during the 14-day period which follows a successful no confidence vote.

Asked about the comments, Cummings said: “Mr Grieve will see what he is right about”.

In general advisers are advised to stay in the background. That also applies here.

On the contrary, except in the case of a General Election, that is exactly what they do.

Everything else, including specifically The Referendum Vote, is advisory.

Which he knows full well.

European Union Referendum Act 2015 - Wikipedia

"The act made no provision for the result to be legally binding on the government or on any future government"

"The court held that the referendum was "advisory for the lawmakers in Parliament" enabling the electorate to influence Parliament in its policy decisions."

Obviously learning from the Trump government which also thinks it has power over everyone and everything.

With this kind of talk expect sterling to continue its devaluation.

Cummings is absolutely right. Vote and vote again until you get the answer the establishment want is how the EU operate. You can practically see slimy EU bureaucrats lobbying MPs to vote against Boris. A no deal exit is not great for them, it will tip them into recession.

An unelected bureaucrat telling elected representatives of the people how to act.

For shame...

If johnson believes this then let him speak.

Another Tory politician's adviser who thinks he's found a way around the British constitution which he shows contempt for.

Let's suspend parliament - his idea; let's by-pass parliament with the RP - May's advisers brainwave.

Time these unconstitutional Tories were put firmly out of parliament. He knows the referendum was advisory.

Cummings talks rubbish. Parliament decides. It is not bound to accept the advice of an advisory referendum, the more so when in this case it was beset by lies and fraud.

Yeah, right. Vote once for something that's advisory and not clear on the detail. And never ever be allowed to change your mind when the detail is clear because a few Tories like the result which will make them and their mates even wealthier!

Spot on!

Cummings thinks he's found a clever solution by suspending parliament. Boris is as bad as May.

Camerson said otherwise, promising the referendum result would be binding. And politicians wonder why nobody believes a word they say!
