Kid with a pot on his head instead of a helmet amuses Thailand

Thailand was in stitches after pictures of a boy wearing a pot with handles instead of a helmet were shared widely across social media. 

 

The boy was one of three on a bike as police in Nakorn Nayok pulled them over. 

 

Officer Tanit Bussabong explained that at first the "helmet" was being worn by the boy in the center and it looked from a distance like the real thing. 

 

On closer inspection it was anything but! The officers had fun making the driver of the bike try it out.

 

Officer Tanit posted that he would donate a real helmet to the boy if he turned up at the police station.

 

The police in the town north east of Bangkok are carrying out a campaign to encourage helmet use and stop three people riding on motorcycles.

 

Their aim is 100% compliance. 

 

Amid the humor is the stark reality that not wearing helmets on motorcycles is one of the leading causes of death for Thai teens. 

 

Thousands die each year, notes Thaivisa.  

 

No mention was made in the Daily News story of a fine or fines.

Bet they were so busy laughing they did not check his licence or insurance, or whether he is old enough to drive. On the same day we get headlines about Thailand being the worst in the world for motorcycle deaths we get this.
I might pop into A & E later and join the merriment of watching other idiots like this coming in after being scraped off the road. Oh how we will laugh !

I have seen guys riding around with a rickety strapless construction safety hard hat, had the pot was a teflon coated one and had a strap, it would have passed for a helmet for sure... and in a case of an accident, the only item that will be undamaged will be the pot...

from what i have seen, its non compliance with right of way

that causes lethal accidents, and often times its not the motorcyclist that doesnt follow the law, its other trafficants,

thinking they can cut off bikes, at traffic lights or otherwise, like my favorite,

making a U-turn and cross all lanes while they are at it, regardless of oncoming traffic

Not just a Thai/Buddhist thing though. Years ago a 14 year old female student used to come to school on her motorcycle not wearing a helmet. Her rationale for doing this was that "God was protecting her so she didn't need a helmet". Her family were American missionaries.

You are on error: Because he is too young, he does not need license and cannot be fined.

I guess there is no need to explain it to you guys, but this kid does not seem to get the fact that his pot does not offer any protection, from anything other than flying debris! It is as likely to crush his skull and maim his face during a crash, as the pavement he will be hurled onto. Or was he just trying to be "cute"? Common sense? Let us not have any of that please.

No. Amid the humour is the stark reality that it's not acceptable for Thai police to take a hard line, especially as the kids were showing some sign of attempting to do things right...

Recently after commenting on a video (which showed a policeman smiling - and taking no action - whilst getting Wai's from three schoolgirls in the middle of a busy junction - all on the same bike and no helmet) I was criticised by Thai's (none supported) saying that they should ALL get locked up, police first.

in 2019, it makes sense.  it's a joke.  it's all a joke.  imagine in "saha raht Americaaaah" the serious culture where folks from South Amerikee are labeled as "marching" into North Amerikee  ... by the president of the United States of America.... and that among them are "Mexican Rapists".   instead of "flying" like all normal people do nowadays!  or riding around in 125 CC scooters instead of 1,200 CC whatever or a car as big as a small house...... in Thailand.
