It is plain hard luck. I agree, very unfortunate timing, but I do question whether the timing was right, pre virus. Even without the virus, Pattaya was / is heading into some turbulent economy times. You need to update your view on the "farm" it's usually a couple of Rai of land that floods in the rainy season - hopefully - the rest of the year its dry and barren! Not much growing up here in Isan at this time of year unless they have access to water, the vast majority don't have that luxury! As to living in Mama & Papas house! more like a shack, steaming hot this time of year, sure the girls will stay where they are for as long as possible! Now, many live in a square brick and tin "shack" with rising damp and mold up the walls. To me, these are still shacks. Do you think the majority of bar girls come from the cities in Issan? They don't. They come from the rural villages, and know how to slaughter animals and fish, and prepare to them to eat. If bar girls don't go home "no matter how slow it gets" perhaps you can tell me why many bar girls go home in the low season. They go home to minimize their expenses during the low season when it's not worth it for them to be in Pattaya. There has been no real high season the year, and that trend may continue. What if it's low season all year round here from now on? There's no chance for the older or plumb ones, and the bar can't afford to carry them anymore.
