Hi,

I have a two week old subtle sore throat, bad breath, swollen glands and from (much) experience I diagnose this as a mild recurrance of my ongoing battle with tonsillitius. I found "back home" that Manuka Honey was absolute gold in fixing this without needing any antibiotics. However I have searched high and low, and google'd till kingdom come, and can find no mention on Manuka honey in the LOS.

Does anyone know where to buy Manuka honey in Bangkok? I need one that is certified to have a high UMF (unique (anti-bacterial) manuka factor)...

Cheers!

I looked up Manuka Honey on the internet and believe that the Unique Manuka Factor is a lot of hype.

My suggestion: use any local honey. Personally, I use propolis drops for the condition you describe, diluted in some water, and gargle with it. Does the trick for me every time. I do not know if you can get propolis drops in Thailand. There is a shop in the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (TCC) building on Sathorn Road selling Thai herbal products and honey and you may want to see if they also have propolis.

Just got the information that the shop I mentioned has propolis in solid form. I know that it is soluble in alcohol but I do not know how one would go about dissolving it.

An alternative is a gargle with Listerine, available in pharmacies, repeated every two or three hours. Should be more effective and faster-acting than honey.

Firstly, thank you for the time you've taken to reply.

In regards to Manuka honey being all hoo-haa. Umm, no. Believe me, it's not a load of hype. It's amazing. And no, regular honey won't "do the same thing". It has to come from a certain tree or flower or bee or something, which is normally only found in Aus and NZ.

The UMF is a real thing, just a measure of how strong the antibacterial effect is. They sell the "too strong to be eaten" stuff in most chemists and you apply it directly to wounds. I know in Australia they don't let any kind of "snake oil" to be sold, they are very strict.

Fellow tonsillitus sufferers I have recommended it to have thanked me sincerely after actually using it and not having to go on antibiotics. I'm not sure what you found on the net to the contrary.

Thankyou for the tip on propolis. I will see if I can find some at the TCCOC! Gargle isn't working. I'm desperate! :o

I buy the manuka argument. Over the years I have been reading - fortuitously, I haven't been looking for it - a lot of stuff to convince me. As I recall the provenance of this honey is exclusively, or mostly, in New Zealand (and maybe also Australia?). Maybe there's a shop - for me one in Chiang Mai would be even better than Bangkok - oriented towards the antipodes??

Over and above the health aspect I like its dark, strong taste.

Anyway, I'd like to buy some too.

I am beginning to understand and have now changed my mind. I can see that there must be regional differences in the antibacterial properties of honey, probably due to a difference in propolis concentration, and perhaps even the effect of the propolis depends on the type of plant visited by the bees.

While the bees generally use propolis for other purposes in the hive, some of it inevitably gets into the honey and for all I know the bees even put it into the honey deliberately. After all, it is also their food and they know what is best for them, and I can again imagine regional differences in the concentration of propolis bees use in honey. Interesting subject, when one digs deeper into it.

Given your desperation, you may need to have some Manuka honey sent to you from New Zealand.

###### - I know I've seen some recently. I think it was in the Tops @ Central Silom. It was NZ manuka honey - I didnt look closely but I assume it has a high umf. I should be going there again this week so will check for you.

Went to TCCOC - the girls there swore black and blue they didn't have it never had it. Though they have "honey soap" and a few other honey like products.

They sent me to "golden place" or something in CP Tower silom. I went there and they had a range of strange honey products including a "2 in 1" and "3 in 1" which were all in thai, and I tried to get someone to translate and the best they could say was that the 3 in one contained "honey, milk and protein".

So I went looking for manuka honey at tops silom central and they didn't have it there either, although they had a pretty amazing range of honey. I spoke to the staff and they called around and confirmed that tops in chidlom central have a product described as manuka honey. I have no idea if its UMF active. I will let you know.

In the meantime, if anyone can find any propolis in this @#$@#$ country :o let me know.

OP, there is a very aggressive strain of tonsillitis in Thailand. I had it myself for a long period of time, and I know a Thai national who's had it for over 10 years!!! I hope you've had it cultured and are consulting professional medical help- most likely you will eventually need a tonsillectomy.
