Buddhist group goes after Buddha-Ultraman artist, as abbot calls on society to forgive and forget

Featured Replies

Is this the work of a very clever artist achieving the kind of exposure an artist can only dream of?

  • Blimey you couldn't make it up!!   The country is going to hell in a hand basket and this is the most worrying thing for them to worry about, seems the vast majority of Thai's in any positio

  • Amazing how these 'Pretend' Buddhists show outrage when they break all the Buddhist precepts every single day on multiple occasions. LOL ????

  • What about the abbots and guys in the Buddhism office who are corrupt as can be, or the rank and file monks who can be seen buying all manner of expensive and luxurious items each day across the count

Getting more and more like militant islamists, while real and serious crimes go ignored and unpunished.

They did not complain when one temple had a statue of David Beckham next to Buddha.

That's because they're both gods in their own right.

(Or as David Beckham would probably spell it - rite)

The religion of tolerance has its fair share of wack job adherents who seem to be blissfully ignorant of the buddhas teachings.

I'm sure they had their red Fanta in hand.

This world is illusion, Maya.

"Suffering comes from attachment" and that includes attachment to Buddha and images, etc.

Those "defenders of the faith" don't know even the most basic "truths" of Buddhism.

Buddhism is a philosophy not a religion, they make do without a God although its adherents have managed to corrupt the teachings so far as to make Buddha one

I'm with you on that completely. It's been an ongoing argument for years though.

It seems, Phra Payom Kalayano, abbot of Wat Suan Kaew in Nonthaburi province is the only one talking any sense and clearly has his head screwed on properly. As for the others harassing this poor student...why don’t you all go and get a life!

I thought the painting looked nice.

Looks amazing to be fair. Also no one has the slightest clue what Budda looked like. Dipictions of Buddha from some places, Afghanistan I believe, show Buddha with shoulder length hair and a beard, whilst in other places he's a bald fatty. For all we know this girl's dipiction of Budda is the most accurate ever created.

I always find it funny how Christians in the US have imagery of Jesus with pearl white skin and blue eyes.

I guess these whack jobs have never been to the White Temple in Chiang Rai. There are lots of super heroes on the walls in one of the temples there. Pretty weird but still the same.

Penal Code’s Article 206 (anything done to an object or place of worship of any group of persons in a manner that is likely to insult them)

This could go for penal code against the TM30, as it insults foreigners worshiping freedom of movement :burp:

"foreign visitors every year, and they could perceive the religion in a negative light due to these paintings, he said."

Actually no, what those millions of foreign visitors could perceive is a closed mind backward society in a negative light.

Quote '...Jaroon said it was too late because the “misdeed” has been done...' pity they don't publicly criticize the Thais that murder or kill someone then go to the victim's family with a 'sorry and a wai' Ach!

Kids here have no chance to be even the tiniest bit creative. Very sad.

2 questions:

What would buddha do?

What would buddha do if the artist was a farang?

the only thing Buddha ever claimed to be was a man.

They have so much more to worry about than some 16 years olds painting. Get on the ball worry group more to concern your self in thailand with and more important

Meanwhile in   Phuket  chinese  die and bar are empty ,.

The painting makes monks/buddhism look good. Instead of, gay, drug dealing, gun weilding, dog <deleted>n, public masterbating, know nothing, know it alls!

How anyone can be religious in the 21st century is scary to me.

wouldnt the sensible option be to see this as bringing Buddhism to the fore and therefore promoting it?

The phrase “people in glasshouses” comes to mind!

Lovely peaceful Thais and their "non religion"

next thing will be burning of this "degenerate art"

We had this before. Did not end well

Yes the creator ended up getting burnt  himself at his  bunker, I live in hope.

Theocratic interference like this should not be tolerated in or by civil society.

Tell them where to go take a running jump with their dogma...

Here's the problem: Too few people follow the teachings of Lord Buddha.

Too many people though worship trees, statues and shaved-head dudes in yellow robes instead.

"Religion poisons everything!"

These silly people should get rid of their holier- than- thou- <deleted> and go on with their lives!

...like the Buddha most likely would have done!

This may come as a surprise to some, but in my 12 years here, I haven't seen any Buddhism at all.  I have seen a lot of Hinduism, including belief in reincarnation and worship of Ganeesh, the Hindu elephant god.  I have seen Thais worshiping Buddha images, but that goes directly against the teachings of Buddha, so that doesn't count.  I have seen 100's of fancy temples, but the Buddha, himself, taught that seeking such aggrandizement was not the right path.  He had his meetings out under a tree.   That makes "Buddhist temple" an oxymoron.  There is a lot of animism, spirits in land, houses, cars, etc.   But Buddhism?  Nobody has a clue.  Even the most of the monks, chanting in Pali, can't even translate what they are chanting into Thai.  It is the blind leading the blind and they have all lost their way.  What would the Buddha say?

I do not know what these complaining monks are, but they are certainly anything BUT Buddhist.

I am remembering the uproar when that artist in the West made a rendering of the Virgin Mary from cow feces a few years ago.  It ended up being defended s freedom of expression.  I suppose that would get you the death penalty here.

This whole affair makes me think of the Spanish Inquisition.  While easy to just dismiss, it is actually kind of scary to think of these zealots demanding arrests and punishment for somebody else's harmless personal expression.  Show me the injury; there isn't any.
