He used to live there back in the 80's and I havent been since 2004. we are both thinking bout relocating at some point. Anyone here been recently? Whats it like these days? where is best to go? girls, drinking and we like to chill down too. how are the prices compared to Thailand? any info would be useful. Cambodia is going through rapid development, and it seems they can't seem to find the governance competent enough to handle the rapid development. However, as said above, it's only a short hop and certainly cheaper than Thailand these days (for some things) so why not pop over? Kind of the same with Laos. If budget isn't really the issue, neither is visa (elsewhere), I would stick to holidays only. Question is if (South East) Asia is something for you at all, maybe you will feel more home in countries as Bulgaria etc, cheap / affordable living too. I lived in Cambodia 2008/09 and go back 1-2x/year, as have a Khmer gf living with me here in Phuket Cambodia is NOT cheaper and is more expensive for 90% of things, its POOR, dirty with sh$#t roads and forget getting sick and expecting decent medical help. Yet everything from water to driving licenses to gas for ur stove to air for your tires cost More $$$ than Thailand. If ur happy drinking $.50 swill, smoke cigs and enjoy $5-10 streetwalkers, it might be the place for you. The people are friendly but so are the Thai's, Burmese, Malays, Laos. Phnom Penh is experiencing a Mall explosion with over 18 of them already constructed or in the process. Shianoukville, (Kampot to follow soon) is a Chinese city with over 80 casinos They keep saying they want more quality tourist but outside Angkor Wat, there is really nothing to see or do for more than a week You will get much better value for your $ in Thailand. In one of the afternoon happy hour bar/restaurants by the river in Phnom Penh, I sat down with my 8 drinking buddies, and the waiter came over and said, "sorry, it's a holiday no happy hour today". As we all got up to leave the manager rushed over and said, "special happy hour prices for this table" and we all sat down again. They clearly made a profit selling beer at 75c/bottle! Back to the OP, Much cheaper than Thailand for beer, cocktails, girls, cannabis, hotels, Indian restaurants. Much simpler and easier for 1 year VISAs, no financials required for over the 55s. Lots of power cuts, but I didn't mind as I was always outside, sitting by the pool, and they still managed to keep the beer cold. If you're OK on your own or mixing with younger backpackers, Siem Reap is very cheap. If you want to hang with elderly expats, Phnom Penh is the place to be, but like all Capitals, more expensive. Tayaout Posted September 26, 2019 Share Posted September 26, 2019 I enjoy Siem Riep and it has an international airport. Pnonh Pen has some very nice cheap hotels but feels like a dangerous city. The Tuk Tuk drivers warned us to strap ourselves to our bags and I noticed nobody is wearing gold like in Thailand.
