Thailand's deputy public health minister has suggested a way to alleviate the devastating haze blanketing the south of Thailand.

Use shorter or smaller joss-sticks.

The advice came from Dr Satit Pitutacha whose directive was explained to Siam Rath by Dr Phanphimon Wipulakorn.

Choking PM 2.5 particles could be lessened if people of Chinese descent would use smaller or shorter incense during rituals, prayers and blessings at homes and shrines to mark the Vegetarian Festival.

She said that Dr Satit had also urged shrines to quickly extinguish incense after prayers and make sure that areas where they are lit are kept clean and tidy.

Also, poorly ventilated areas should not be used to light incense as this can cause health problems like respiratory illness.

  • Pass this brilliant suggestion on to the Indonesians IMMEDIATELY.

  • The idea that these cause a haze problem to the country is laughable , people would need tree size joss sticks to have any kind of impact .

Right. Until next time, anyway. And still doesn't make the OP any less ridiculous.

But north Thailand and China unhealthy. Is normal for there.

Yes the English translation to the OP is ridiculous.

what the guy really say is about

“According to the EPA, exposure to the particulate matter present in incense smoke has been linked to asthma, lung inflammation and even cancer. In fact, long-term exposure to incense smoke was found to be related to an increased risk for upper respiratory cancers as well as squamous cell lung cancer.”

Phuket have the vegetarian festival next week. Is chinese festival, they use a lot of this one. So he just say good not to breathe it.

it will not reduce the air pollution from the fire in Indonesia. That’s would be ridiculous to think like that.

Wonder where the Pope's smoking handbag registers on the particles scale?

Light blue touch paper 'BEFORE' closing the hatch.

555 all day long at this jerk-off statement.

Probably meant to sell more booze. The laughs and smart cracks could go on forever.

Is this the same guy that said Bangkok will not get flooded because we are to far away from the melting ice.

Why not use boat propellors to push the haze away?  Easy!

I dont even waste my breath with it anymore

Being sensitive to the needs of my GF...helped her set up a Buddha area where she could go in private and continue her normal faith routine.

Well, the smoking coming from that room enveloped the whole house...asked why so much smoke...seems she needed at least 1 incense stick for each family member..."16"...2X per day...

We have since compromised to a smaller number...still stinks up the house...????

I quite like the smell of incense.

Fish sauce I can do without.

I wouldn't speak too soon, winds are fickle this time of year. Until the NE Monsoon establishes itself, there's always the chance for the wind to switch back to the south and bring smoke back up from Sumatra again.

As for Dr Satit Pitutacha, I'm assuming he 'went' to the same university as Thammanat.

So, he's on a par with the PM and can use Google?

And did she suggest smaller chicken/pork barbecues which are every 100 metres, giving off more smoke than joss sticks or Churchill's cigars, or ban them all together.

With comments like this, I now know why they call it the LOS....nothing up top !
