cleaning vegetables

Featured Replies

I saw an interesting article on the  khaosodenglish about the vegetarian festival coming up,in the article the "permanent secretary of the Public Health Ministry"

recommends:

"For those who can’t afford organic, Sukhum recommends immersing produce in water for 15 minutes before washing for two minutes. This method removes 25 to 63 percent of chemicals and pesticides, he said.

He also recommends soaking produce in a mixture using half a tablespoon of baking soda and 10 liters of water. This method apparently removes up to 95 percent of chemicals."

Who does this to their vegetables before eating them? Sounds like a lot of preparation.

i wash mine under the tap, but maybe thats underkill.

(why ten litres of water?)

wash them under a tap to ensure any chemical residue is removed is fine.

Of course he's stating an overkill ….  that's his job, he's secretary of the public health.

A good splash of vinegar into a couple of litres of water. Quick wash & let dry before going into the fridge.  Also use vinegar for many basic cleaning chores.

id have said that until he started mentioned percentages of pesticide removal with each cleaning method.

He (or someone else) appears to be simply making up random "facts".  The effectiveness of washing varies with the vegetable and pesticide concerned.  Sometimes it can remove more than 95% of residue.

I do the same, vinegar and water, and like you use Vinegar for cleaning, does a great job on glass.

The latter is not necessarily bad, I can live with a mutation, after all having a prehensile penis does come in handy for things like cooking and toenail clipping, but would suck if the mutation was not useful, like the bloodshot eyeball on the bottom of my left foot.

Has anyone tried the Asparagus around town?

All the fruit and veg I eat is imported. Now, that doesn't mean its chem free etc but living in a rural farming area and seeing the daily chemicals being sprayed and transported around, there is no way I would eat any veg etc grown/produced here.

Also seems to clean the insides of English people, given their odd partiality to throwing vinegar on their chips and most other foodstuffs.

Life-expectancy has gone sharply down in the U.K. over the last few years, by the way.

Coincidence? I think not.

I tried it, but the only superpower I got was never being wrong on TVF

I want a prehensile penis !!!! what vegetables do I need to eat for that?

glyphosate and gmo ... you just don't wash it off anymore

some dude probably will claim it does not harm the human body

get your boiling kettle, and pour a cup's worth of boiling water over an Apple in the sink.

wait , even less than a minute... and then see all that whitish crud coming out of the skin!

 - anyway that's the chemicals used to make an apple look more shiny than natural...

(mostly the red ones, but a 'coated' one sort of feels like a hard ball of plasticine... the way the skin sticks to yours)

wash them in vinegar for around 5 minutes.

then add baking soda and soak for 10 minutes.

then sit in ice cold water for around 5 minutes

and then repeat into the vinegar for 3 minutes.

rinse under the tap for 2-3 minutes.

rinse again and scrub for a couple of minutes.

Vegetables should be completely free by this time and ready to cook ….

however,   everyone has farked off now and gone to get take away's because you took too long   !!

Who has the chance to buy organic products?
The stale air, the poisoned ground, where can a truly organic cultivation be made?
The organic is a marketing to rub the money of stupid people.

My GF has a habit of ALWAYS soaking vegetables as well as fresh meat products in a water solution with half a teaspoon of SALT for about 20 min. It will rid most of the outside pesticides and any crawlies that may have contaminated the meat.. We all know that meat sold in local markets can be stored in less than ideal conditions..

Sad to say Viva, that the supposedly organic vegetables sold here in speciality markets and some supermarkets are not much more than a ruse!

I think it was two or three years ago when some research was done by an independent body here, whereby they tested all sorts of vegetables, including organic, for pesticides, insecticides and whatever, and the result was...........a great deal of the food labelled "organic" had just as many pesticides etc in/on them as did the non-organic.

As soon as the producers cottoned on to the fact that they could label their produce "organic" and get a higher price for it, then that's what they did.

So in reality you don't know what you're buying, and anyway no amount of washing and soaking in anything will get rid of anything other than the surface "nasty stuff".

Cock-a-Leakie soup for starters should do the trick followed, of course, with 'Toad in the Hole' and 'Spotted Dick' for afters!

Funny that some people think that cleaning the vegetables skin will totally clear them from chemical, it's at the same time ridiculous and sad for your kids.

The only correct way to clean vegs and fruits is soda water mixed with vinegar (and water of course), but still, only the skin will be cleared, so when possible it's even better to just throw it.

I think so too, don't ever wash them, let the cooking bit take care of that...even steaming.

Take your pick, there are quite a few around.????

We soak all our veggies in a bowl of water that we have added a splash of vinegar to. The problem with baking soda is that it doesn’t dissolve in cool/cold water. Soaking them in a bowl doesn’t take much time since we do it about an hour before preparing our salads.

I quite like my chips with Sarsons Malt Vinegar, their not chips otherwise. And life expectancy has nothing to do with vinegar, I used to drink the stuff by the pint and I'm still going strong, thanks.

The simple answer is to just eat more animals, problem solved.
