i can't believe.....

Yeah, same here. I have lived life thinking that I would be dead by 45 with the hobbies and sports I enjoy. You know, the live fast, die young philosophy. I am now in my mid-60's and am paying the price for the years of abusing my body. Would I change anything? No, it's been a helluva run.

so what did you do that so damaged your health and well being and nearly put you in a grave?

started very heavy drug  and alcohol usage when i was 17. continued for close to 15 years....solid. i mean really solid.

at least 10 or so close calls with death in friends cars. let's leave thai driving out of this for now ok haha.

i have almost drown 4 times.

smoked ciggies for 20 plus years.

you'll like this one. so much wild and crazy unprotected sex that i don't even really know how i didn't get the drip or anything. came out of it all unscathed. changed that to protected when i arrived here though but continued with the sex fiend life. i am not retarded i don't think.

fell through the ice a few times back home during the winter. lucky the water wasn't deep.

had a emergency flight going into scotland when i was young. landing gear on the plane wouldn't come down.

fell onto the subway track in toronto.

3 times been outside a bar when a shooting happened within spitting distance of me.

missed the short bus from hat yai to krabi on the weekend of the 04 tsunami.

lived in hat yai in 06 when the bombings happened. a close friend died in the bombing. i was on my way to meet him to eat when it happened. was late due to my drug use. drugs do save lives kids.

my own fault and not a thai problem...dropped a scooter in chaiyaphum doing about 95 when i lived here before. flip flops, warm up pants, t shirt, and no helmet ...of course.

a few months ago i rode to hat yai on my bike and one of my luggage straps came undone. was flapping against the back tire for god knows how long. remember indiana jones and him throwing the wood into the nazi guys tire. think that but on a thai road going banana like speeds. a thai guy on a bike pulled me over and pointed it out to me. thank you kindly sir you are a great man whoever you were.

overall a real lack of common sense and brains throughout my younger years which i'm sure many can relate too. some of which has carried over to my so called adult life. hence the need to change many things in my life.

i am sure there are some things i have forgot but i attribute that to the short term memory loss ????

now i quite value my health other than the driving. speed may end up killing me one day.

Yes I can relate to that, I am 71 now which astounds many Thais who think I'm in my middle 50's, no age related illnesses, clear skin no wrinkles and yet in my youth right up until my mid 40's There wasn't a bar or beer garden that I didn't frequent on a regular basis in Munich and drank well over what was good for me even by German standards, two packs of cigarettes a day was normal and healthy eating was for hippies. Now I rarely touch alcohol, it does nothing for me, I still smoke but no morning coughing, still work hard physically if need be, walk several kilometers a day for fun to keep my 70kg weight, yes I'm pretty amazed at my genes.

I can ditto you @soalbundy all except for the drinking, never did really indulge. But also 71 and zero health issues. I still work physically (probably key to by health, along with good genes) and like you, people can't believe my age.

We can only hope that such good health continues.

4 near misses .

UK, (1975)

Thrown through the windscreen, had I been wearing a seatbelt would have been crushed to death by the engine.

In Thailand

  • Mugged by machete in Bangkok.
  • Left phi phi the week before the Tsunami
  • Missed a flight that later crashed on Samui
  • Driving behind a Thai lorry carrying full length tree trunks that started dropping it's load .!! How I dodged those bouncing logs I will never know !

How did you almost drown 4 times?

first time - i was probably 5 or so. went to a pool with a friend and his mom. can you swim...of course i can. i jumped in and sank to the bottom like a stone. lifeguard in to take me out gagging and spitting all over the place.

second time - a couple years later. bar harbor maine. hit by a wave and pushed to the ocean floor. then again and again until i finally surfaced sucking back water yet again.

third time. local ymca. high diving board. running start. slipped about 5 feet from the edge and slid along the board into the water. sank like a stone with my leg bleeding all over the place. lifeguard in to take me out gagging again.

fourth time was about 16 or so. playing with friends at a local dam/lock sort of place. got caught in the downfall of the water and couldn't move. friend had to pull me out.

to this day i cant even open my eyes under water. i feel like a shark is going to bite me even in a pool. ya i'm that much of a p**sy. in fact i wouldn't even feel safe with water wings on.

don't count on me to swim to safety or help anyone in the water either.

i did take swimming lessons but let's not pretend i'm a michael phelps.

before returning to thailand in july of this year i had not posted online in over 12 years other than a few comments on here just before leaving. i have no social media presence other than the few postings i have made on here. up until leaving canada i owned a flip phone. tried to get one here but realized that i would have a hard time even texting here without a phone.  since i left thailand i have had 5 of my friends die (all thai)....6 if you include my friend who died in the bombing.

I had a hangnail that got infected. I fell asleep on a bear trail. Im weak and little and pugnacious and nasty. I almost got into a bar fight last night with, you guessed it, a Yob in a singlet, who had nothing to do with the incident but saw a chance to try to make Bangkok like Newcastle and therefore pitched in with a hearty "fawk que ya  b*o** c***", which of course left me to respond, etc, real tough guy he was Im 40 years older, but hey a younger Yank then jumped in and of course, the bouncers then removed the offending Pom and his crew as they shot me the bird and tried to continue the fight outside.

I always tip the bouncers hehehehe, thus I am alwys innocent.
