Massive tax hike coming for CO2-belching ‘big bikes’

The Excise Department will boost the tax on “big bikes” by Bt100,000 starting on January 1 based on rates adjusted to reflect motorcycle CO2 emissions.

Nutthakorn Utensute, director of the department’s Bureau of Tax Planning, said this weekend the Cabinet had acknowledged  the tax hike for high-powered motorcycles based on CO2 emissions rather than engine size, as originally proposed.

The tax hike will apply to bikes coming out of the factory or imported on and after January 1.

Bikes with engines of 150cc or less – basically 90 per cent of all motorcycles in the country – face an additional tax above Bt100, representing an increase from 2.5 to 3 per cent of the retail or import price.

Big bikes with engines of 1,000cc or more will be taxed an extra Bt100,000 due to their higher fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

“The higher tax on big bikes will not affect most owners since they’re worth more than Bt1 million, which means the owners can afford it,” Nutthakorn said.

“The big bike has become more popular in Thailand, but still only represent 2-3 per cent of the total number of motorcycles here.”

The new tax rates can represent 3, 5, 9 or 18 per cent of the purchase value, varying according to CO2 emissions.

Nutthakorn said that if manufacturers do not reduce their CO2 emissions, the Excise Department will slap buyers with further increases of up to Bt700 million per year.

Only 2-3% of bikes in Thailand and 'owners can afford it" - so zero positive benefit on the environment then?

And the much heavier, more numerous cars with their ac running whilst stuck in traffic are not a problem?

Just curious - is there any tax on imported diesel powered tanks and submarines?

Where do the punitive tax dollars go to make amends for the offending bikes co2 emissions? (rhetorical question)

yes but 'plants 'are needed. there are huge deforestation projects going on all around the world. and not forget, O2 is plant food when the sun don't shine.

the issue , I can't see mentioned as yet, is NOx, also the manner the 'big' bikes are driven equates to many forms and products of pollution

burning permits for locals should be taxed with all the plastics that get burnt every day if they are going to cast dispersions on big bike owners just another grab for cash to pay for ammunition

Yep, and here it is. The new regime government money grabbing and hitting at all Thai. This is just the beginning. 90% oif al lbikes????? More than that.

Now this is a huge hit and slap at people wanting bigger bikes. Don't know how the big bike manufacturers will take to this. Maybe they will move their factories out of Thailand? Will this also cover a resale registration tax once they think of it?

How is this number calculated? Has to be wrong.

Too many people at the trough and too much military items to buy and not enough money?

This taxing is already out of control on all subject matter. They are grabbing money in all areas they can see for the taking. Thailand is now in a spiral going down.

This gentleman should go back to school to learn and understand that CO2 is life on earth;
as paradoxically as that;
in fact, it is the food of the trees which releases oxygen into the atmosphere;
it is also the food of the microscopic animals that inhabit, by billions, the sea ...
No CO2 = no trees = no oxygen = no life on earth.

It would be better to focus on methane, which is a dangerous gas with regard to global warming.
This gas is produced in phenomenal quantities by ruminants;
other gases are dangerous for the man, those used in the apparatus of cooling of the air therefore those which allow us to live better when it is hot.
Thailand is a huge consumer of electricity to make cold air;
Siam Paragon uses more electricity than the entire province of Mae Hong Son.
and almost every vehicle that drives here has airco.

If the government was at all concerned with pollution,  they would crack down on industries and illegally modified or poorly maintained (usually diesel) vehicles that are everywhere. Just about everyday I see a modified diesel pickup billowing out black smoke (yes, they actually tune it this way). Totally unnecessary.

The pollution of all the big bikes in a year will add up to less than the daily pollution caused by VIPs (including 'Nuttyhakorn') holding up traffic so they can go about their important business.

Here's an idea.. How about starting with those thousands of buses and and even more of all kinds of trucks and lorries that ply the roads of this country belching black putrid  smoke into our faces and lungs before you deal with a handful of 'big bikes' huh?...

Wait till the new year when they start burning the sugar cane . 3 months of black snow and smoke to look forward to again .
