At present, it is easy to get a multiple entry Non O visa (from Savannakhet or Ho Chi Minh City) with no financial proof, and do border bounces. However, there is a very real possibility this will not be possible in the future:

(1) Financial proof might in future be needed for Non O visas (as they already usually are for tourist visas) and multiple entry Non O visas might no longer be available, period.

(ii) Immigration might decide that a Non O visa is intended for visiting your Thai wife, not living in Thailand, and might decide to abrogate your multiple entry Non O (as they are increasingly doing with tourist visas).

I wish you luck, and the worst may not happen, but it is as well to start thinking about what you would do if you needed to apply for one-year extensions in Thailand (with financial proof) or relocate outside Thailand.

a lot of 'mights' in that post

Yes, and none of this is sure to happen. However, I would point out that it is only necessary for just one of three eventualities to come to pass to put a lot of families (including the OP) in difficulties.

When evaluating the chance of Immigration abrogating multiple Non O visas, remember that the land crossing at Aran/Poipet sometimes already does for the purported reason I mention.

Some countries that used to provide multiple entry Non O visas have already discontinued them, and consulates (as opposed to embassies) are only now allowed to issue them in a few places.

I do not think I am raising a scenario that has a minuscule likelihood of happening. It is a very real risk.

Tim, I've been on a Non-Imm " O " Multi ( Marriage ) for approx the past 25 Years, I'm also Retired here now but DON'T Have the required funds to get Extensions......Do YOU Really think that immigration would " Kick Me Out " If & when they do away with the Multi " O " ??..... And Who would then SUPPORT My Wife as I'm Bloody 100% positive that The Thai Government Would'nt !!!!

I really do hope (for your sake, and that of other families) that the worst does not happen. However, Immigration really might (not will) kick you out. As you say, if that happened, it would be a bad day for the dependants of foreign husbands currently living in Thailand on low incomes.

Further: What will become of your wife / kids? The Powers That Be couldn't care less. Let them sell themselves, rot or who cares?

As a holder for many years of a Non 'O' multiple, I have increasingly detected hostility to such holders at checkpoints in the south for the past year or so. Maybe I am oversensitive, but I smell something brewing.

And add to that, Non 'O' multiples being no longer available with the Evisa system they are trying to roll out worldwide. Hope for the best, but don't depend on (y)our multiples being available for ever.
