Why all the discontent?

So, I been lurking on these forums for while. One thing I have noticed is the general discontent of being in Thailand from some forum users. I do plan on semi-retiring in Thailand sometime in the next 10 or so years, but sometimes I get second thoughts from reading the posts here. Part of me thinks it is just maybe some who are forgetting how home really is, although I will acknowledge there are problems in Thailand as there are everywhere. So, is it really that bad? Or is it just the case of people complaining cause they have nothing else to complain about?

Yep, nobody likes that.

If i have a friend sleeping in the house, i am supposed to report that. And the opposite.

Mind boggling if you ask me.

What is the reason and logic behind it ?

Is it because that if there is a crime commited , the Police know where the culprits will be staying ?

Wow, I was not aware of that. How is that enforced?

My Thai buddy says because there are too many foreign criminals in Thailand, and i accept it as a partial explanation, but there could be more than that.

I was not aware of it too, until few months ago. I used to spend weeks in my girl friend home, and the opposite.

It's not really enforced, but in theory, if you don't report, you are breaking the law. afaik.

I think there's something in that, especially in these times of political instability and uncertainty, those in power need to be able to puff out their chests and show how 'effective' they are being in their jobs. Just look at some of the ludicrous media shows the Immigration put on whenever they catch a 'foreign criminal' with all them silly posters and that.

many things will happen/change in the next 10 years, you have plenty of time to worry about it, we on the other hand just (for starters) hope for a democratic government (wishful thinking I know)

"do plan on semi-retiring in Thailand sometime in the next 10 or so years,

Some of us will not live in Thailand or anywhere else on the planet anymore in 10 or so years... Things might change a lot in 10 years. Best will be you come when you intend to retire. Then look yourself. I think this might be the only way to find out if you like it here or not.
