BANGKOK (NNT) - The ASEAN Business and Investment Summit 2019 (ABIS), one of the related meetings of the 35th ASEAN Summit 2019, has come to an end with the key points being economic cooperation and support for the growth of the ASEAN digital economy. Vietnam, the next ASEAN Chair, expressed its readiness to host the summit next year.

The Chairman of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC), Arin Jira, spoke of the success of ABIS 2019 held over the weekend in Bangkok. On the concept Empowering ASEAN 4.0, the meeting discussed four important topics: technological infrastructure development, digital connection for trade and investment in ASEAN, new labor skills and unemployment reduction in ASEAN, and support for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in accessing innovation and capital for higher competitiveness.

At the opening ceremony of the event, the Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister, Jurin Laksanawisit commended the private sector for realizing the significance of ushering ASEAN into the 4.0 era or the digital age. Mr. Jurin stressed that ASEAN is moving towards the digital economy with a focus on human resources reform, by re-skilling and up-skilling workers.

World leadership figures outside ASEAN attended the ABIS 2019. Prince Andrew of the United Kingdom shared his vision and proposed guidelines to advance ASEAN into the digital age, uniting the bloc, and connecting economies to help the region cope with the ongoing trade war between China and the United States.

The Russian Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev, confirmed that his country will work with ASEAN to prepare the region for the digital economy following Russia’s success. Russia ranks fifth in mobile phone use which brings it more online business opportunities. Mr. Medvedev also suggested that ASEAN invest in the digital economy infrastructure.

Mr. Arin said the world leaders’suggestions align with the principles of the ASEAN-BAC, which seeks to support and promote the ASEAN Community in 2019. The chairman further suggested that the Association issue new regulations to attract investors and develop new labor skills, especially those related to new technologies. ASEAN should also support the utilization of technology in SMEs to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of the business sector, laying a foundation for the development of the ASEAN economy in the future.

The Chairman of the Business Advisory Council of Vietnam, Doan Duy Khuong, said today that Vietnam is ready to be ASEAN Chair in 2020. The ASEAN chairmanship is an honor for Vietnam and an important duty to develop a sustainable digital economy that will bring both opportunities and challenges to the region. He added that the members of ASEAN must collaborate to promote and turn the vision of its digital economy into reality in a strong and sustainable manner.
