The American drug suspect who was involved in the dramatic escape from a Pattaya court last week has been pronounced dead.

The confirmation came from the Sa Kaeo Crown Prince Hospital that Bart Allen Helmus died at 6 pm last night.

He had been in a coma on a respirator and had been unresponsive since last week when he was erroneously reported as having died in the Thai media

The 39 year old shot himself as police closed in on him and his wife on Wednesday last week following their breakout with a Thai man the previous Monday.

Local police in Sa Kaeo had mounted a bedside guard that changed every eight hours and appealed through the US Embassy for relatives to come forward.

I don't believe in that version of the story...Someone helps him to die...

well, the whole "event" was published on this TV on video, so unless you have a video where he is seen standing in the field, hands behind his head while being patted down and then later is mysteriously unconscious, your beliefs are up to you.

Bart Allen Helmus, an American who broke out of court and shot himself when cornered by police, died yesterday (November 14) at 6 pm after falling into a coma.

Helmus, 39, and his Thai girlfriend Sirinapa Wisetrit, 30, were accused of trafficking 1 kilogram of methamphetamine and illegal possession of a firearm.

He could be sentenced to life imprisonment or even death for the drug-trafficking offence, police said.

The couple escaped from Pattaya court on November 6, armed with a knife and a gun provided by another defendant Ton Ninthet. Helmus stabbed a court official, seriously injuring him before the three fled in a car.

The couple reportedly tried to escape to Cambodia but were tracked down by police, after three days of searching, in the border province of Sa Kaeo province.

Police has contacted the American embassy to locate his family and reported his death to Sirinapa.

Do your research. FARANG are scammed out of trillions by Thai hospitals. Legs are amputated because it's highly profitable etc etc. Thai hospitals do very nicely $$$. They scam Thais too. TIT. Far more lucrative then jet scam skis.

Didn't say they didn't, but all the hype about making foreigners have medical insurance was all about how they run up the bills and do not pay.

Who picks up the tab on this one?

Just sayin

Didn't matterd much to him anyway, as he was already brain dead, pity they could not used his organs to save other's lives, at least he would have done one positive gesture to the world he lived in...

I agree 100%. There should be some sort of procedure in place for such situations.

How do you know he was a drug peddler. Obviously impossible for a farang to be a drug peddler in Thailand. Locals absolutely will not allow it. Absolutely no necessity for immigration to check his work permit.  Obviously he was set up and couldn't pay up thus his arrest. His crime was having a low IQ for failing to know outsiders not welcome to sell drugs or being set up by lady boy as is often the case. Australia hard core too if newbie locals try to sell drugs. You will be a long time in hospital after being beaten to a pulp by the encumbants. Scary stuff the drug underworld.

So you're saying he was involved in drug dealing, but he was caught because he was naive. Are you suggesting this makes him innocent in some way?

I don't rejoice in anyone's death, but I have little sympathy for a person who chooses to deal drugs with all the misery associated with that line of 'work'
