Yes June of this year.

So what was he hiding from these past 7 years from the prime of his life?

because he knew it would happen...eventually... no matter how long the wait, until all the scrabble pieces fell in to place for the Yanks.

So he conveniently hides in the Embassy of a nation with a stinking reputation on suppression of journalism and free speech.

When he could have simply gone back to Australia, where the government have said nothing he did broke their law, hence no extradition would be effective.

It is my belief Assange entered the Ecuadorian embassy as a publicity stunt that then got completely beyond his control.

The man’s an idiot.

because JA knew; that to step one foot out on the street, meant he'd be putting his freedom up for ransom, to the highest bidder

He knew nothing of the sort.

There was no no extradition request, he could have chosen to have gone back home to Australia, instead he chose the theatrics of hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy.

You can’t fix stupid.

Absolutely shameful Sweden. You played your part in the corrupt harassment of Assange to please your US masters.

Well, the place IS run by an avowedly feminist government. So no surprise there.

IMO, I would say Julian Assange trouble may have just doubled, he will be extradited to the USA to stand trial, plus Team Hillary still have claims on his life...  The clock is ticking...

Julian Assange is a free journalist who has reported war and several others crimes.

Julian Assange shall be immediately released and UK police juridical system shall feel shame of his illegal arrest (as he did not commit any crime in UK)  and present detention, indeed proved hwo UK is just a small puppet of US!

Release now Julian Assange !

He did commit a crime in the UK. He failed to answer bail. That is actually quite a serious crime. That is why he was sent to prison, and why he will be kept in prison until any extradition requests are decided. Silly fellow...

Only an idiot wouldn't see through the sham Swedish case. Several prosecutors have now said there's no case to proceed.

It was a ruse to get him in a court, in custody so the Americans could engineer extradition.

Can't have someone exposing crooked old hag Hilary and being allowed to get away with it.

The American 'establishment" is a crooked as it comes!

Why would they not just kill him rather than going through all that?

What freedom?

well, at that time, he was in self imposed exile... and within that context, he still had the key to his own room.

Come on; even those of you who are anti-Assange, don't you think this new development is weird and fishy ?! The rape investigation has been dropped after such a long time, and not much long after Assange was put into jail ?! Maybe, just maybe, it has been a sincere, decent investigation by the Swedes. But really, it all seems fishy to me.

Or perhaps they know he’s guilty, but that getting a conviction on the rape is something of a <deleted>-shoot, while the extradition to the US will likely result in significant jail time.

It could be a case of unintended consequences?

Didn't Deputy Chief Prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson say that the complainant’s evidence was deemed credible and reliable, but that after nearly a decade, witnesses’ memories had faded.

Assanges antics jumping bail and "seeking asylum" have enabled him to dodge the bullet as far as the allegations of rape in Sweden are concerned. Unfortunately in so doing he has run into the sights of a much more powerful weapon, the USA,s desire to put him on trial for Wikileaks.

Assange may have gotten away with it this time but it has been my experience that these type of people don't change, and the act that got him in trouble the first time will occur again;  sure as god created little green apples
