That Terrible, Terrible Pain: The One You Never Ever Want to Feel

 

It isn't some terrible form of cancer, or wretched heartbreak over a relationship, it's something far worse. We are not talking about a few minutes of barbaric torture that the Vikings would administer before finally putting you out of your misery, and it has nothing to do with a physically debilitating disease, such as MS, which I would not wish on my worst enemy. This condition only affects older people, so if your life is cut short due to an accident, you will not have to experience the "terrible, terrible pain".

"So What is it?", I hear you thinking,

 

I was informed about the "terrible, terrible pain" at the grand old age of 17, and it terrified me!

Picture the scene, if you will, a teenager with his entire possessions in his backpack, on his way to explore the great unknown, and on one glorious July Sunday morning, was thumbing a lift from Guildford, when I happened upon a quaint looking pub with a stunning garden. Never one to pass up on a new experience, I decided to stop for a while and spend a little of the little money I had on some cold lager.

 

My ice cold beer in my hand, I made my way to the centre table in what can only be described as a garden that Eden himself would gladly have died in. Headphones in (we had cassette tape Walkmans then), to enjoy the rare combination of cloudless skies and zero wind was my only goal, when some minutes into the experience, another person came into the pub garden. If I called him a scruffy man, I'd be doing him a favour, and for some unknown reason, he zeroed in on me. With at least a dozen empty tables, I figured this guy was either drunk and wanting company, or has his sights on relieving me of some of my money, neither of which I wanted.

 

This old and somewhat bedraggled man had a shine in his eyes and we sat in relative silence, both enjoying the fine ale, and when a young family arrived, he made an observation,

“Look at that young man over there, he likely met the girl at some pub or party, and before he knew what hit him, along came the baby and with it, a preordained life. The house, the mortgage and the job in a factory are the nails in his coffin, and the poor chap will try his best to grab what little pleasure he can from his life.”

 

He shook his head and looked at me,

 

“You only get one shot at life lad, and whatever you do, don’t led circumstances dictate your life, otherwise you’ll end up like our friend over there. Look at him, poor boy has a sadness in his eyes, as his future looks nothing like the life he had once imagined.”

 

We shared a few beers as I listened to his enchanting stories of jumping ship in Barbados, enduring the endless sun in the Sahara Desert, and spending a year living with a Vietnamese fishing girl. He has ridden horses in Siberia, felled trees in Canada and spent a year herding cattle in Australia, and at the grand age of 73, he was now a homeless man in England.

 

At this point, a solemn air came upon the table and the old man moved closer, as if to whisper,

“Get out lad, while you still can. Leave these shores and set off on what will be the adventure of a lifetime and don’t listen to anyone who tells you otherwise”

 

He had an air about him that said, "if you don't like me, I have no problem with that" and exuded a feeling of serenity that only comes from a person that cares not what others think.

He then told me of a terrible pain that some people experience just before they die. I was horrified, as he continued to tell me that the pain he is talking about is one that gnaws through to the very marrow in your bones, and can come to a person as they near death.

 

Finally, he enlightened me,

“It is perfectly natural for a man to reflect upon his life as he nears his death, and if you never really applied yourself to anything in your life, the sheer waste of opportunities will become evident and you will feel that terrible, terrible pain that comes with the realization you have wasted your life.”

From that day on, I made a promise to myself that whatever happens, I will never feel that terrible, terrible pain.

Judging by the "likes" so far Sipi is way in front. The other uses of laughs Trophys etc are wasted and mean NOTHING (you can of course change them too)
