Fast forward 2 decades and where are we now? The robotics industry, for example, has reached the point where the machine can do a somersault, walk up a staircase and even stand up after it’s been knocked down! Robotics and AI go together like cheese and pickle, and many so called experts have raised a very important point, “If we create machines that learn, these machines will rapidly come to the realization that human beings are destroying the planet, and are likely to have an agenda to eliminate the human race.” It doesn’t take a genius to realise that we are, in fact, destroying our own back yard, so AI will reach that conclusion very early on. Would it not be logical for AI to want to remove us from the face of the earth? This would ensure the planet’s long-term survival, and by that time, there would be little we could do about it. Experts have been warning us about AI, and those that think, “We simply pull the plug if AI gets out of hand” should think again. Check out the TED Talk on “Can we build AI without losing control over it, It is very much like letting the genie out of the bottle, as we will not be able to put it back into the bottle, and this is a very real risk. The experts say that the genie is already out of the bottle, and we can never stop the ongoing development of AI, and such is the pace of development, it’s hard to keep abreast with cutting edge innovations. Disable people are enjoying the benefits of AI technology by inserting microchips in their bodies, indeed, many able-bodied people are having chips inserted under the skin, to enhance their abilities. The Singularity Experts all over the world are predicting the singularity, a point where technological growth is both uncontrollable and irreversible, and when you look at all the data, it isn’t a question of if, rather when. Could it be that AI is the very last invention that the human species creates? To get a clearer picture of AI development, imagine a machine that takes 35 seconds to ingest all of the knowledge that the human race has ever known, it read every single thing ever written in less than 5 seconds! Would such a machine think, “Well, I know everything, so no need to learn anymore.” We are being told that the quest for knowledge would be ongoing, and there would be nothing we could do to stop that. It is important to realise that AI would not have emotions, compassion, or indeed any feelings at all, and if it decided that the human race is destroying the planet, what would it do? Some experts say that we can build into AI our values and certain rules, making AI safe, but to be absolutely honest, we are going down a road that has never been explored, we have little idea of the consequences of building machines that are super-learners. This is a very thought provoking video that puts it all into perspective Blending AI with the Human Conscious This is one field that is being aggressively pursued, and I think it won’t be long before a person’s memories, values, ideas and opinions can all be digitalised and uploaded onto a server. We are in the process of creating an interface that allows the human conscious to interact with digital technology, if we haven’t already built it. Scary stuff, and one problem with exponential learning is that is develops at a frightening pace. Enhancing the Senses Soon, we will be able to improve our senses, sight, hearing, spatial awareness, taste and touch, and the temptation to do this will be far too high to ever consider scrapping the idea. Machine learning is exponential, and that means a machine that can learn will teach itself non-stop, and AI won’t stop when it has more knowledge than we do. Imagine a machine that has 1,000 times the knowledge of any human being? It is a difficult concept to grasp, but the experts are warning us of what they see as the future. If the complete history of our planet is one year, then mankind has been around for ten minutes, and period since the start of the Industrial Revolution is about 10 seconds! What we have achieved in 100 years is absolutely frightening, and for the first time ever, we have the ability to affect our climate, and with exponential machine learning, machines would learn at an ever-increasing pace. Mother, Mother can't you see, the stranger before you is really me? Your second son, the distant one. I have traveled so far to see your face, please don't deny your loving embrace. Have read all about it and understand your condition, still can't help looking for some sign of recognition. If I could peer into your troubled mind, I can't help but wonder what I would find? Is my dear Mother hiding somewhere, or is there nothing behind that stare? I've heard it called the long goodbye, for me it's just a terrible way to die. Pain and pills, depression and despair, after living a good life it just isn't fair. I know you don't mean to hurt those around you, but the pain we all feel would surely astound you. Father is doing the best that he can, but he's not a saint, he is merely a man. My visits are often extended from six weeks to six months, while the rest of the family is hard pressed to manage six days, even once. Ideas and suggestions of what I should do, all things I've thought of and nothing new. My dear Father is an archetypal old fashion male, getting him to do anything is a very hard sale. I'm under pressure to get more done, but he is the Father and I the second son. Mistakes we have made opportunities missed, all written down would make a very long list. Perhaps life's entrance is meant to hurt, a poignant reminder we are all headed for dirt. We think of our bodies as strong when they're frail, no matter how one lives in the end our systems simply fail. Writing today has led me to weep, reminded what we sow is what we will reap.
