Wilawan Phayanoi, deputy director-general of the Comptroller General's Department, revealed on Thursday (November 28) that her department is readying more than Bt700,000 for those who registered with the “Shopping for the Nation” campaign earlier this year to receive a 5-per-cent VAT refund.

“This campaign is in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s policy to promote the economy during Chinese New Year and the submission of VAT data via www.epayment.go.th,” she said. “Those who registered and made purchases during the Chinese New Year festival (February 1-15, 2019) will be entitled to a maximum Bt1,000 VAT refund per person by the end of November.”

“The Comptroller General's Department has finalised the processing of VAT data of each registered person and will transfer money to their registered promptpay account starting Friday (November 29),” she added. “There are 6,918 registrants in total with an accumulated VAT refund due of Bt705,440.”

Surely those figures are wrong. Big announcement for an average refund of approx 102 baht. Or is my math wrong ?

So that's 5% on 7% VAT paid at purchase?

Let me try figuring that out:

Let's say during Chinese New Year I bought goods with a net worth of THB 100,000. On that I paid 7% VAT, or THB 7,000, bringing the total purchasing price to THB 107,000.

On those THB 7,000 VAT paid, I could now reclaim 5%, or a whopping THB 350... provided I have registered for that campaign? I'm not sure that is worth the effort of having to submit the kept sales receipts god knows where. Just saying.

Your big mistake is doing the analysis on it. Lots won't and be disappointed after the event where you feel the same way before the event.  ????????

'Shopping for the Nation'? Seriously?? L-o-l!

Well, let's demand our own stimuli too:

<Boozin' 4 the Nation> & <Bluntin' 4 the Nation> & <Shaggin' 4 the Nation> ... well you're probably getting the drift ...

These campaigns have already been ongoing for decades. But "Shopping for the Nation"... that's a brand new one. And don't forget: You probably can claim that partial VAT refund on those booze bottles, too -- provided you bought them during Chinese New Year. As per the shagging... I'm certain they don't charge VAT for it.

There's a reason why similar events tend to be way less popular than the first one...
