"Out of Date" Bangkok cabby fined after attacking motorcycle with a shovel

Naew Na reported that the Department of Land Transport had acted quickly after a Bangkok cabby was pictured attacking a motorcycle with a shovel.

He just happened to have the gardening tool with him.

The DLT found that his public vehicle driving licence was a bit out of date - 23 years to be precise!

Sanurak admitted that it was him in the incident at KM 12 on the Bang Na - Trad highway on Thursday evening.

He said that a motorcycle was going the wrong way to make a U-turn and brushed the side of his cab. The motorcyclist didn't come off. Sanurak had a passenger at the time and drove off.

The motorcyclist followed him and ordered him out of the cab.

He claimed that the motorcyclist pushed him in the chest. He got back in his cab then the motorcyclist kicked his wing mirror.

Sanurak then grabbed some kind of spade or shovel used for digging earth that he happened to have with him.

He was using this for his own protection as the motorcyclist was a bigger guy, he said.

As he got out of his cab the motorcyclist ran off. He used the shovel to take two whacks at the now fallen over motorcycle before leaving the scene.

The DLT officer listen to all this and discovered that Sanurak's public vehicle license had expired on December 15th 1996.

He took the following action:

1. 1000 baht fine for impolite behaviour
2. 1000 baht fine for out of date licence.
3. Three hours of politeness and service training.

He warned Sanurak that if he did anything wrong in the future he really would be in trouble.

Naew Na made no mention of any police involvement or charge for criminal damage in their report.

How can a taxi driver possibly drive for 23 years without a license?  Gosh, this place never ceases to amaze me.

He's used that shovel to dig a nice little hole for himself.

Silly man.

The shovel wasn't the only tool involved in this incident !!

The real surprise is that 24 years ago he even bothered to get a licence.

Its probably best to never renew mine... Most of us have two... motorbike and car.. Well .. thats 800 baht every renewal and one wasted day.. Cheaper to go 23 year without it.. and take a 1000 in fines... great.... !

So much for BIB checks on the road traffic?

I wonder how much he spent in total over the last 23 years when he was stopped?  I guess he didn't have a valid Taxi certificate either because I'm pretty sure you would need a valid license to get a valid taxi operator's certificate.

It's also amazing that he was allowed to continue driving a taxi after being an outlaw, carrying a shovel in his car and skirting the system for so long.  A slap on the wrist, 2000 baht fine and forced to suffer through 3 hours of politeness training.  A quick wai and he was back on the road in his taxi as if nothing ever happened.  The DLT needs to do a little better in the deterrent category for such offenses IMO.

Amazing Thailand.

He is now known to his mates as the Ace of Spades and will be fined and jailed for 5 years for having a gambling name "next up"????

Gee I wonder if he’s the only one???!!!!

1000 baht fine for 23 years driving without a license is an insult to everyone who keeps their license updated.  Unbelievable.

23 years unlicensed for public transport???

Blacklist and not allow to live in Thailand 10 years

1,000 baht fee is ridiculous

Does he have to buy a new bike for the other guy?

A lot cheaper than regularly updating it!

No mention if either one had even has insurance or not, but a 1,000 baht fine for impolite behaviour? I would more classify this type of behaviour as psychotic!
